There have been similar suggestions, but they all appear to be closed, so here we go…
With the Plexamp mobile client, Plex has become a much more viable/capable music platform. But an issue I have with Plex as a music server is the lack of support for multiple editions of albums.
I don’t think a full solution like exists on Roon where albums are grouped under one entry and the default album is displayed along with a version link to see the others is necessary.
If Plex could read the version tag and display it along with the name in the album view multiple albums would be completely usable and supported even without a complex solution.
Here you go. Please comment/vote in this existing suggestion to help us avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes.
Unless I’m missing some unique aspect of your suggestion I’ll close this thread as a duplicate.
Only tangentially related. I am asking for additional information to be displayed on the album view, namely the contents of the version tag. This is not a request for advanced matching and handling of versions.
The other thread is indeed going one step further in discussing how to source the album edition/version/release… but that’s just on top of having the capability to assign/display the edition/version/release for an album (no matter if you have just one or many.
Assigning that information manually or based on an edition-tag in the embedded metadata or file names is also discussed in that other thread. So I would argue it’s still very much in line with your suggestion.
