Thanks to the security mess with the WD Mybook Live product, I’ve have found myself the (sceptical) owner of a couple of WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra Nas systems, a 12Tb and an 8Tb.
I had been using the MyBook Live drives to house my Plex Media files, and I run my server from my iMac 27" 5k. This configuration ran almost perfectly, with just a few bandwidth limitations for guest users, but most of the time it was fine, especially all those nice little Plex features like intro detection, and the little pre-roll clip I created for my movies.
So now, all of my media is on the 12Tb EX2 Ultra, which comes with a Plex app that can be installed and run on the device, therefore technically freeing up my iMac? Well no because the dual core 1.3 GHz A9 Proc and the 1GB of ram don’t of course even come close to the performance that my iMac provided.
So what I have done is maintained the server on my iMac, now accessing the media from the Ex2 Ultra Plex share, and basically set up just for my guest users, but is obviously available to me to organise and check, but I have also installed the Plex app on the Ex2 Ultra, and run that server as a home exclusive Plex server.
Now the problems… On the iMac server everything is still basically the same, although annoyingly there has been a distinct reduction in network performance for my guest users?
But everything else is essentially the same including the pre-roll clip and the intro and thumbnail feature.
On the Ex2 Ultra server however, the pre-roll clip doesn’t play and the intro detection/chapter thumbnails don’t work, and with about 10Tb of media, it took a hell of a time for the server to run through the files to generate that intro/thumbnail data, but it doesn’t use it?
I don’t know if its something to do with the App with the WD product, or if I’m not setting it up correctly, it’s not a desperate issue I know, but it seems such a simple thing and so very annoying that it won’t work.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
