Very Disappointed With XBox One App

I signed up for the $4.99 per month plan.

Some important features this app just doesn't have.

1. Anyone, and I mean anyone who opens the plex app on my TV will be able to see all content I have mapped on the server. This means my little nephew who is pretty tech savoy will be able to see things that aren't for kids. Yes, I am a horror movie fan. I regret purchasing the ipad app as well.

I immediately uninstalled it because of how open my content was to anyone who picked up my ipad.

2. This goes on the same point as number one. The media manager is freely open as well.

Yes, it's running on a non routable local internal IP address. So this means that no one from the outside can access it. That's a good thing.

But, if you go into the media manager now. Of course I could see and play all movies I have mapped. Once again, I can picture my nephew seeing the plex icon in the task bar. Then wondering what that is and then open up the media manager. He will be able to see things I don't want him seeing. On top of this, he could delete folders and do things I don't want him to.

3. I am probably in the minority here. But I don't really like the idea of horizontal screening to pick the content I want to watch. Horizontal screwing is good for tablets. not for a 60 inch TV.
This should work like the windows file explorer. The user should have the ability to switch from different views. For me, I would choose a vertical listing of files when a thumbnail view located to the right side. So when I scroll "down" from content to content. The thumbnail view would show a small screenshot of the picture / video.

4. When fast fowarding through the app. I have no idea how far I am going into the movie.

It's only a guess. The netflix app does a great job when you fast forward through content,

You see a frame by frame image of where you are going.

5. Any standard media device like the Western Digital device I had allowed me to stretch or full screen any movie that might not fit the whole screen by default. Yes I understand this does cause some picture loss. But I think some of us don't care in certain situations.

6. BUG: I find that after I watch a movie and I back out of it to see the rest of the movies in the list.
Half of the time, half of the thumbnail movies will be blank. I have to back out to the main folder list screen. Then come back in to see the thumbnails again. This is kind of annoying to do this.

I am most likely going to cancel my subscription plan here.

I am seriously thinking about creating my own app for the xbox.

Luckly I know javascript, C# and XAML :)

I am sure a lot of you might disagree. But Plex isn't that great because of this.

I am seeing the same bug that you are when I watch tv shows. I just posted a thread on that issue specifically.

I am sure a lot of you might disagree. But Plex isn't that great because of this.

You know if you took a few seconds to read the support side, you can easily fix 1) and 2).

I did look on the support page. Where do you see security setup?

If you need to share only some sections with some clients, look at the support documents re sharing.

See above, also require authentication on local network.

It follows current XBO design guidelines.  Maybe the XBO isn't the right platform for you?

It's only a guess. The netflix app does a great job when you fast forward through content,

Turn on media index files.  Then, you'll get the nice images when you seek forward or rewind.  Again, see the very helpful and exhaustive documentation.

Aside from being a bad way to watch TV, I don't think it's even supported on XBO playback.

This shouldn't happen, but remember this is the very first release of the app.  ■■■■ happens.

I am most likely going to cancel my subscription plan here.

If the only reason you pay for Plex Pass is for the XBO app, and you're not happy, then you probably should.  I'd invite you to look into other clients and reasons to pay for it - it's a pretty big feature list.  Though remember, most features and functions of Plex are completely free!  How great is that?

I am seriously thinking about creating my own app for the xbox.

Luckly I know javascript, C# and XAML :)

Please do!  Competition is great.  We'd all love you to make your own app!  Another FANTASTIC thing about Plex is that, though the Server is proprietary, anyone can make their own client!  Get to work!

I am sure a lot of you might disagree. But Plex isn't that great because of this.

It's great for a lot of reasons, for a whole lot of people - but maybe not you, and that's okay.  I still like you anyways and welcome your feedback.

You know if you took a few seconds to read the support side, you can easily fix 1) and 2).

Also, there is a "Require authentication on local networks" options that I am aware of.

That is not what I need. That's for any other local computer on my network to access the media manager.

I am talking about. What if someone other than myself needs to use my PC for something.

They would have direct access to the media manager without a prompt.

They'd also have access to your email, address book, web browser history, probably your bank account, porn stash and location history....  I'd recommend not giving your personal computer to someone else and password protecting it.

I have many things on my laptop I don't want people to have access to that open automatically: Facebook, email, Reddit etc. So I lock my PC when I am not using it (Windows key + L). If I need to let someone use my laptop I have created a second user account for that purpose. I log in that user, and hand them my laptop. That way none of my accounts are available.

That's not what I am looking for. I when to share all my content with my xbox. But when I quit the app and reopen it for use.

I want to be able to log into the client. Based on access rights. It would show certain pieces of content. That's the proper way to do this in my opinion here :)

All this means is that other computers on my network can't browser to the server without authenicating.
This is a good feature. I already have this turned on.

But, what if my nephew is ever and he wants to sit and use my PC that is the main server.

He could possibly access the media server. I can see that for sure.

It's all about options for me. I don't mind it as is now. I just would like the option to change it to something that is simplier for me.

Thanks!! I looked around the docs a little. But to be honest. I don't have much time these days. I barely have enough time to be on here lol :) Maybe this weekend I will be able to get into it more.

If you use the xbox 360 system video player. These features are there. So why not here :)

Well good for you friend. To me when I hear the word "server". You should be authenicated to access it. Just my opinion though.

Do you really want to enter a password every time you want to watch something. Seriously. Your little nephew shouldn't have open access to your xbox, TV or your computer.(or anyone you don't trust for that matter. Get a life!!!!

I wonder if you have kids?  You see, this is a feature I would like to see implemented to some extent.  Not passwords, that would ■■■■ me off, but I'd really like to be able to easily share content on the network but restrict what they can see.  I can do this for friends I share media with quite easily, and it works fine for my daughters who access my Plex via their phones or tablets.  However, my eldest son has an Xbox One, and I'd love to put Plex on it so he can watch movies on it (on the rare occasions he's not playing Minecraft that is) - but only movies I have in a certain library as I don't want him watching my extensive horror collection!

Thats uncalled for.  Parental controls is one of the most requested features for plex, and in my opinion long over due. Telling someone to "get a life" for wanting that is just ridiculous.

in this thread : dude complaining about features that dont exist that he could have found out didnt exist if he had bothered to read the documentation.

I did read the docs dude. You seem to be taking what I am requesting personally.

1. Plex does not allow us to restrict what content shows up when I open up Plex on the Xbox One.

To me, this is a "common sense" feature that is missing from the Xbox client.

2. Yes, you can secure the server access for "other" computers on the network.

But, if someone can sit down at the main computer that works as the server.

They can easily open up the admin media manager. Yes, I can lock my computer.

There are times where I just don't lock it all the time. I want to know if I don't lock it.
Someone can't access the Plex server without authentication.

At least make this an "option" that someone can turn on.

3. I could tell you to get a life to, but I won't. I am sure you are a good guy.

Have you ever seen those authentication forms that has a "little checkbox" that says "do not show me this window" again.

OR!!!!!

Have an "OPTION" in the admin section of the server that allows you to turn this feature off.
Therefore guys like "YOU" can freely access the media server "WITHOUT" having to enter in a password.

Problem solved!!!!!!!!!

1. You can create multiple users, then restrict which content those users can see.

2. If someone can sit down at your computer and your computer is unlocked, they can already kill any running process for the account, access any file that account has permissions to, semi-permanently delete any files that user has permissions to. And you're worried about them opening up Plex?

3. You're coming off as whiny because you immediately assume Plex isn't capable of doing things that it is capable of and express disdain for what many people have found to be an amazing piece of software. A few minutes of searching through the forums or support info would have answered your questions. And if they didn't, you could politely ask, rather than complaining about how the app doesn't work exactly the way you want it to.

Even though I don't have kids, I agree somehow that there should be parental control on Plex in general and in the long run it would be nice if there is a way where we can link the xbox account with the plex account. So this way on the xbox you can only use a certain xbox account (the parents account) when entered a password and then you have access to all its media and games.

When the kids log into the xbox then they get their media and games and plex loads the childrens profile...

This would be the best solution in the long run IMO

What msm8bball said pretty much sums up my thoughts as well. I'd also recommend avoiding using red text unnecessarily since, like all caps, it usually deters people from remaining civil.

Parental Controls (including user switching, etc.) and security are highly sought after and requested features, and I agree. I think liking the appropriate posts in the feature request forum is the way to approach those items.

From an Xbox perspective, my understanding is that each Xbox Live account is linked to an individual Plex account. As such, if you set up a new Plex account for your nephew and only share the kid-friendly libraries, you can link it to an Xbox Live account for your nephew. Then, he can sign in to the Xbox One and open Plex to only see content you deem appropriate. Either way, I think the thread on Multiple users on one Xbox is is the thread to follow and comment on to discuss this feature (Plex devs have even responded saying they are still looking into how they want multiple users on the Xbox to work). Also, he doesn't have to be aware of either of the accounts.

I acknowledge that your nephew can still manually sign into your Xbox Live account (that is linked to your Plex account), though, Xbox likely has options for login security for different accounts (I'm unfamiliar myself).

As David S said, feedback is great. But it's good to search the forums and leave your feedback/requests/recommendations in the correct spot (e.g., server items don't necessarily fall into an Xbox forum). Also, rather than listing your feedback as complaints, just list it as feedback--there's no reason to sound negative. If the $5 is that big of an issue, you should have tested out the functionality of the free software first to see if it met your needs.

In any case, best of luck. And, I hope Plex meets your needs in the future, as it's great software. Or, hopefully you can make do without certain things (or with workarounds) until the things that matter to you get implemented.

As you mentioned previously that you don't have much time on your hands, a reasonable person would have read through details about sharing/authentication.  AUC is a widely requested feature which eventually will show up but your lack of research kept you from knowing this.  So the fault lays on you for assuming that this is a perfect world.
