Hi. I’ve finally decided to investigate very poor transcoding performance when playing music. To clarify, movies and TV transcode just fine (I only have 1080p content, so it’d just be the same resolution at a lower bitrate).
I believe it’s the transcoder’s fault as I was recently downloading music to my phone, via plexamp and the download was agonizingly slow as it usually is. I was transcoding to 160kbps opus from flac lossless (flac16 primarily, sometimes flac24). I decided to try downloading the original flacs in plexamp, without transcoding, and found that all of my downloads became rapid!! I’m talking leaving the phone to download overnight vs being done in 30 minutes!
When I stream music it also appears as though songs buffer for a long time (I can listen to the same 2:33 song for a minute and it will still not be fully buffered), but I believe it’s the transcoder being awful slow.
I am using software transcoding on a ryzen 5950x with the transcode directory placed on a sataIII ssd (it currently has ~460G of space, so that shouldn’t be an issue). The CPU is well cooled and mostly idle.
How should I go about troubleshooting this? Transcoder quality is set to “Automatic”.
