I can’t find out if I want a video card that does more sessions or more transcodes at one time. I would like to be able to have multiple people streaming at the same time. I share with family and friends. Thanks!

what do you think is the difference between sessions and transcodes?
how many simultaneous users/transcodes do you expect ?
intel gpu have no built-in limit, but will certainly run out of resources sooner or later, how many depending on the codecs and resolutions involved.
I believe that others have mentioned 10+ transcodes on intel 630 gpu.
consumer nvidia cards have 2 or 3 ENcoding limit, but that can be removed with a driver hack. GitHub - keylase/nvidia-patch: This patch removes restriction on maximum number of simultaneous NVENC video encoding sessions imposed by Nvidia to consumer-grade GPUs.
nvidia cards are more limited by the video ram. 4k transcodes take about ~1.4 gig of video ram, per transcode.

if you are intending on transcoding 4k, please read entire thread @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you
I was looking to be able to have at least 5 people streaming at once. I’m not looking to do any 4K. I would think transcodes mean how many can stream at once, but what do I know.
You can stream without transcoding, it’s called direct play.
If you have sufficient upload, and your clients have sufficient download and are configured correctly, and compatible with the content, then they can direct play and not use up your cpu/gpu.
Ok I appreciate all the help!
All my movies are mkv files. My family is using Apple TV, roku, Samsung TVs and fire TVs. Not sure if those devices do direct stream that’s why I was lookin* at a new video card.
So I meant to ask. So is session limit mean only 2-3 people can stream at the same time? Even if it is direct play. Or does direct play not count towards the limits
There are no set limits. The limit is whatever your server can handle.
Ahh ok
