No matter what type of file I play, PMS wants to transcode my videos when playing on XBOX One. I have a ton of .MTS home videos that are in 1080P. When I playback these videos, they stutter/pause every couple seconds. My CPU is close to being maxed out for the transcoder process.
I am running:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+
5GB RAM
Gig-E hard wired from xbox to PMS
Ubuntu
I cannot imagine that my HW is undersized! I have tried messing with the transcoder settings in the PMS Server settings area, but nothing seems to work.
Thanks for the eye opener. Is the only alternative to transcode all these 1080P videos to a different resolution?
Either that or use a client that does not need transcoding. Which usually means Plex Home Theater on a PC device (direct plays virtually everything) or the Samsung Smart Hub app on a Samsung smart TV (direct plays most commonly used file formats).

So that begs the question as to why XB1 doesn't do direct plays??!!

Microsoft enabled MKV playback, but only for their native video player at present.
I had a similar issue, I upgraded my hardware in the end, and it makes a night and day difference.
Here's hiping MS open up MKV a playback to third parties.
The disastrous alternate is to convert everything to MP4
I have a similar issue with playing .mkv's with subtitles on my Xbox One. If I play mkv's with subtitles off, they run perfectly, but turn subtitles on and everything stutters every 4-5 seconds. Furthermore subtitles either don't show at all, or only for a very brief time.
As server I run an Athlon II X250 3.0GHz with 4GB RAM. Is this a hardware issue? Subtitles seem to work fine when playing them on my server through VLC or mediaportal....
I asked this in another thread, but it seems more appropriate here.
I too have problems with playback pausing every ~5 seconds on the xbox one. I'm playing 1080p mkvs, but my processor (e7300 wolfdale) has a passmark score of just about 2000 (~1990). I'm wondering if it is still underpowered for this process? I know 2000 is fine for video transcoding, but it also has to remux the audio if it is DTS and change containers, right? So, for the xbox one, would it be fair to say you need a passmark score well above 2000?
What I don't get, is that I thought it was just remuxing the audio and changing containers, so I would have thought that 2000 was sufficient, but if video transcoding is also happening, then I can see why 2000 isn't enough.
Just wondering if I need to tweak something on my end, or it can really be answered by the CPU
I don't know if this is down to your hardware, I had a similar issues and had stuttering every 5 seconds. I had to change the transcoding to highest possible in the xbox menu. my CPU benchmark is only 970 which is way under but I don't have any problems with 1080p 10-12gb files. Although when I turn subtitles it struggles again, not sure why subtitles cause such a issue CPU will be @ 50% when normal transcoding and when I turn subtitles on its ramps up to 100% and stutters again :(

Are you sure your actually transcoding that file when your CPU is at 50%? You may just be remuxing from a different container. Subtitles would definitely be requiring a transcode at this time, since they are not support yet by the Xbox player.

OHHHHHH, thanks, this answers so many questions. I was wondering why, after enabling MKV playback I STILL wasn't getting 5.1 and what was going on with the stuttering (I even moved the bloody server because I thought it was a network issue !!!!!) So looks like my dreams of having one media hub to rule them all are still a ways off :( Any idea when this will be fixed, when they will open MKV up to third parties, its pretty useless till that happens really.

I'm pretty sure I am transcoding, I see the plexnewtranscoder running in task manager and they are all MKV files. Majority wont even direct play though Xbox media app because of DTS sound. If you can tell me how to know for sure I am willing to try, but my machine would also transcode files fine for chromecast... again could be remixing but doubt every file I have played would be ok.
I'm also having this problem, It has only started this week. I have an Intel Core i7-4790 @ 3.60GHz so I'm 99% sure it's not a hardware issue. All my other devices work fine.
Anyone got any ideas? I'm pretty new to Plex so I have no idea what could be causing this.
OK, I'm seeing the pausing and it appears to happen based on the resolution of the video. The higher the resolution, the greater the chance to see the pausing. It really gets frustrating to try and watch a movie, especially during that intense portion of the film, and get the pause. I sometimes will pop over to my Roku box to finish watching the movie without pauses. I know that the xbone and the Roku are different viewing environments, but it would be nice if the xbone could lose the pause.
For the record, I am ripping blu-rays to MKV format (using makemkv) and then using handbrake to rip them into M4V files.
Please let me know if I can provide any further info...
