Video playback is not fluid on some devices

Recently acquired episodes of a popular TV show in .avi format. When I play them back through the Plex app on my Sony Android TV smart TV, the video playback is flawless. However, when I play the same episode(s) back through the Plex app using my AirTV box on another non-smart TV, the playback is not fluid. The audio, is perfect – just the video isn’t what it should be. I also tested the Plex app on my Android mobile phone and I get the same non-fluid playback. By non-fluid, I mean that it appears (to my novice eye) that frames are being dropped as the playback is somewhat choppy (not smooth/fluid). A friend with whom I share my library with tested some of these episodes through his Plex remote connection to my server and he experienced the same issues. When he played another program in my library, however, the issue was not there. If I run my laptop’s Plex Media Server they play smoothly, as they do on the main Plex Media Server that runs on a desktop computer.

It sounds like it could be the files themselves, but if it was, I’d think they would exhibit the same issues across all Plex platforms and not just some. Am I wrong? I’d appreciate any feedback if someone else has had a similar issue. This is the first playback issue I’ve had in quite some time with Plex. I am up to date on versions across all platforms I use.

The Plex platform does make a difference – not all platforms support all filetypes. I don’t know much about android platforms (mobile or Smart TVs) or have any .avi files so my advice is pretty high-level.

In the Plex server, what does the dashboard/activity page look like when you see the choppy playback? (More info here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200871837-status-and-dashboard/)

On the smart TV (where the files play perfectly) this is what I see:

On the AirTV box (where the choppy video occurs) this is what I see:

To me they look the same. And now, my Android phone won’t play the files – says that the connection to the server was lost. But if I play a file from another TV series, it plays OK.
