In the latest Windows desktop plex client application the Video Quality option is missing, only audio and subs can be selected. Further more it defaults to transcoding to SD quality despite default settings beeing set to “Maximum”.
There seems there was a release that was installed, then quickly rolled back? Because yesterday windows updated the plex desktop app twice. I suspect the rollback did not work as expected?
I completely removed and reinstalled the app, and now it’s working like expecteed again, video option available, and defaults to max quality and direct play per settings.
The version number is still the same despite uninstalling and reinstalling from the plex web download link: Versjon 1.12.0.1232-aacabe78
I just updated to that very same release (but Plex for Mac) and the playback quality is showing up… so I cannot confirm/reproduce this behavior.
I thought this might be related to the subtitle – but even with a forced subtitle, the quality setting still shows up for me.
Do you have the same issue when playing your video through Plex Web? (trying to identify if there’s some web plug-in/add-on that could interfere with something in Plex since it updated the built-in web client in the Plex for Windows/Mac app for this version.
It’s the same file I’m playing back in the app after reintalling, and it’s working fine now, including direct play of the same subs. I suspect there was newer version that was installed but then rolled back, but the rollback did not manage to roll back all files and thus uninstalling and installing anew fixed the issue. Web playback was working as expected at the same time.
