Video rotating on Sony Android TV

Hi,
love the Plex but have run into issues lately (or found them now at least).
I run the Plex server on a Mac Pro and have zero to few issues. Everything runs as it should and I watch movies and look at photos and videos taken by mobile (both iphone and android).

I’m watching on a Mac, iPad, Samsung tablet, Samsung S8 Galaxy with no issues but then I have a Sony Android TV and everything works there aswell EXCEPT the rotation of videos.
I can’t find a way for the Plex app on Android TV to autorotate the videos. Watching them on any other device works but not on TV.

I have seen others here in the forum having the same issue but I have not seen any come up with a solution. Is it really that hard to make it work?

Yes, confirming I’m experiencing the same thing on select videos in the Photo library. For those videos, orientation is fine on the web UI, Windows App Player and Android Phone Player on a Google Pixel 3XL. However, on Andriod TV (Sony as well), those videos are not rotated correctly.

Interestingly, the Android player version is the same for both the TV and phone. The only other visible difference is the Andriod version that each player is running on. On the TV, it is Android 8; on the phone Android 10.

The issue has been resolved in the Android mobile 7.30.0.16082-beta as described here.

The issue has regressed in Android TV 7.30.1.16477

How do we get this fixed? Having the same issue where all my iphone movies preview correctly, play on my phone correctly, but change orientation when trying to play through plex on firecube tv.

Plex is installed via the QNAP, orientation issue observed trying to play home movies through FireCubeTV.

I have the same problem on the android TV 8.0.1.17410 app when playing portrait recorded video’s from my phone’s in or video library or photo library.

Same problem. Even if there was a manual way to rotate videos or pictures, some button on the remote or in the UI. Although automatic would be ideal, even THAT would be better than having NO recourse but to manually rework the files, which is just not feasible with a photo/video library of 50,000 files…

There are other topics like this going back years. This never gets acknowledged or fixed. I guess Photo Album just isn’t an important feature to the Plex team?

Hi there I’m having the same issue on my Sony (Android) TV only.
*.MOV videos with the Orientation “Left Bottom” and other video parameters per attached screenshot display rotated sideways Displays rotated sideways to left, and stretched . See screenshot on my TV: TV example

Some extra troubleshooting I did. I opened up these files in the Android ‘Video’ app and the VLC app on the Android TV and they also displayed incorrectly rotated, so seems to be more an Android TV problem rather than a Plex problem. The VLC app on my PC displayed both videos with the correct orientation. Would be great if Plex could come up with a fix for Android TV’s though!

Hi,
My observation is that this is most probably MediaTek’s HW accelerator problem. If I disable it in VLC settings, orientation gets fixed, but unfortunately SW decoder is not fast enough :frowning:
