This issue persists in the official Android TV release 7.27.0.15018

Update: A few videos in the Photo library are not correctly oriented on Plex Android TV (on a Sony TV - not sure of the significance of this). Those same videos are correctly oriented in PMS, Plex Web, PMP, Plex for Windows and Plex Android mobile.

A more recent incident with some additional background reported here.

I would say the developers already know each time they release a beta if it has been looked at or fixed.

I’m not sure there’s a need to keep saying each time.

I’m sure they have it in their notes to look at.

I’m sure they do, but touching the topic acts as a keep alive timer to prevent the topic closing after three months. It also forces me to check the beta version as I may have missed the advertised fix.

Unless the context is different, I cannot agree with this fix. My testing reveals otherwise. In the Photo library, videos that display correctly in PMS, Plex Web, PMP, Plex for Windows and Plex Android mobile, may not display with the correct orientation on Android TV.

Hey!
Could you please provide a sample /share a small video via DM?
We failed to reproduce on 7.30.0.16082 so must be something specific/different and we’d appreciate your help in order to reproduce and fix. Thanks!

Hi @romancamelia,

Thanks for getting back to me. I was about to PM you a couple of affected videos and thought I’d send some screenshots with this post. The videos were exhibiting the orientation issue when played on the Sony Android TV running Plex Android TV 7.30.0.16082-beta.

I forced the Sony Android TV to take screenshots of the videos. Afterwards, when I replayed those videos, they had the correct orientation on the TV. Go figure!

What’s curious is that when I took the screenshots of the videos (one 90° rotated and the other 180° rotated), the screenshots themselves were correctly oriented. I tested other videos that were known not to be correctly oriented, and without screenshotting them, they now have the correct orientation.

I did not restart the TV or the Plex app, or clear app cache or data so I cannot understand what has triggered the correction for this beta. Anyway, I’m satisfied now (in a weird roundabout way) that Plex Android TV 7.30.0.16082-beta has resolved the orientation issue.

Thanks again for following up so quickly. I’ll close this thread now.

Hi @romancamelia,

I thought this was fixed, but there appears to have been a regression in Plex Android TV 7.30.1.16477. I’ll PM you some details.

This issue persists in Android TV 8.0.0.17051-beta

I’m having the same issue through Plex on the FireCube 2nd Gen. Home videos created via IOS that are correctly oriented for some reason turn sideways when attempting to play them through PLEX on the FireCube. The preview shows the correct format, but when you press play the movie plays sideways.

The weird thing is ONE time two of the movies played correctly oriented, then I tried to play the next movie and the issue came back. Going back to the first two movies that played with the correct orientation made no difference, now they were playing sideways again. Something is going on where plex is either transcoding or doing something to the movie when attempting to play it which causes it to play sideways instead of the correct orientation it was filmed in.

This behavior really seems like some sort of BUG.

Plex is installed via the QNAP, orientation issue observed trying to play home movies through FireCubeTV.
