Video stuttering since version 8.18 of the Apple TV app

Well there is a thread that’s over four years old of people letting you know…

That’s actually on my todo list. We wrote a tool to purge testers who stopped using TestFlight but Apple changed their API, so that needs some tweaking. I’ll shout here when we have free slots so you can sign up :+1:

We’re seeing performance improvements in all our test devices, but it’s worth remembering there’s only so much you can do on a 9 year old device. Are you having performance issues with any particular codec/format or any particularly high bitrate media?

@hsousa
Not wanting to go completely off topic but regarding another issue with the Apple TV 4K is for those using AirPlay devices (HomePods etc) and audio completely dropping out after a few minutes.

It was reproduced by at least one Plex employee at least 6 months ago. So I’m just wondering if it’s still an issue on the roadmap.

It’s both h264 and hevc media in mkv. Audio is usually DDP5.1. Both new and old player effected.

I have noticed some improvement with this past week’s tvOS 17.4 release and current beta of Plex.

The AppleTV HD devices I have on tvos 16 have no issues and the one on 17.4 has no stutter issues in Infuse.

I just double checked and it’s still in our backlog. Hopefully after this update we’ll be able to tackle some of these.

Both new and old player effected.

Interesting, because “old player” is Apple’s native AVPlayer and there’s really not much we can optimize there.

Once we have a public build out with the updated player stack please take it for a spin and send me a DM if there’s still significant stuttering on that device under tvOS 17. Happy to take a look and see if there’s something we can do there. :slightly_smiling_face:

Well all the same files play perfectly smooth on infuse, so doesn’t seem to be a limit of the Apple TV HD.

I have issues with all files, direct play and transcode. Doesn’t matter if mkv or mp4, even low bit rate dvd rip type material will skip.

Edit: interestingly using “old player” allows some of the low bit rate to play without issue, but then things like live TV streams from HD home run become unplayable and Blu-ray mkv skip ever 20-30 seconds.

@hsousa sorry to be off topic on this but after we have the new player stack will there be any focus towards supporting DV profile 8 in both CM2.9 and CM4.0, since the tVOS17 apple has supported P8 and other players (infuse) now have this, would be awesome if I didn’t have to switch players to watch my content in its correct colour space.

Hi! It’s definitely something we want to take a look at (I’d love this myself ) but can’t make any promises/predictions on an ETA.

Thanks for the extra info :bowing_man:

Hi Hsousa

Thanks for looking into this. Just wanted to check if you will also be adding in HDR10+ support the work you are carrying out. I know there is another forum page about this: No HDR10+ with Plex on new AppleTV 4K 2022

I’m using the 2022 Apple TV 4K and I also experience the video stuttering issue with both the new and old player with all video formats. However Infuse is smooth as silk.

Will the…hopefully the testglight release notes will be clearly marked, player with metal-api? Or some codename?
Don’t be like reddit. They have old, new, and new-new. And it’s terrifyingly complex.

I don’t know if you have tried to sign up for TestFlight over the last few days but as I mentioned previously I got purged a while ago.
Last night however I managed to sign up again so definitely worth trying as soon as you can.

Cheers, I’ve filled in the form for beta access. Very keen to see how this goes.

Edit: I noticed that the post was specifically about high bit rate files. This stuttering issue happens for me even on low bitrate 480p content and doesn’t seem related to anything about the file. It’s also unlikely to be throttling given infuse has no issues with any content and my device sits on the TV stand with complete airflow. Hopefully just switching to the updated API is enough.

Same issues here.

Infuse uses Metal.
