Video stuttering since version 8.18 of the Apple TV app

Hi!

This issue is still being tracked as part of the new beta player that’s been in testing since earlier in the year. We have been continually fixing issues as they’ve been reported in the relevant thread, and we have a few that continue to be investigated.

We’re super appreciative of all the help and feedback this community has been providing on this. I know there’s still work to do, but we couldn’t have gotten where we are without your help.

Is there any target for getting a fix released? Are we talking weeks, months, years? We haven’t hear any updates for over a month.

The key phrases are, “…been in testing since earlier in the year…” and “…continually fixing issues as they’ve been reported…” How have you been testing for this long and still do not have anything that can be shipped. Why are you continually fixing all issues as they are reported? It sounds like textbook scope creep. Why wouldn’t you prioritize reported issues and develop a roadmap for multiple releases?
Most software delivery methodologies prioritize an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) delivery. The MVP is not supposed to be everything. The #1 issue that needs to be addressed is the stuttering issue. If this has already been solved for then why are you not releasing a new version of the app that includes this fix and address all other issues in subsequent releases? None of this makes any sense.

I suggest keeping an eye on the beta thread, and seeing if the TestFlight may be open. Unfortunately, it’s been a bit of a cat and mouse game as the stutter is sometimes fixed, but the fix breaks other necessary items. For instance, for a while there was no audio playback on iOS devices without headphones (which use the same client). Now the stutter has returned in some use cases, and a number of subtitle issues have been introduced. These are basic functionality items as well, and I can understand not wanting to push out an update that breaks other basic functions to fix another.

I do wonder if the new Plex App that was just announced may also make this text irrelevant.

how is it this difficult to play ■■■■■■■ videos?

I understand that you can’t release software with fixes that break current functionality. However I’m seeing in the beta thread that they are trying to also include a fix for Dolby Atmos. How is this an a priority issue? I’m certain that those with Dolby Atmos setups makeup around 10% of the plex users. We can live without Dolby Atmos support. We can’t live with stuttering video playback.

Per Craig’s post today, 8.44 should include the new player in the main application. 8.44 just entered TestFlight today, and it looks to have solved a lot of the recent issues that we’ve been seeing in the experimental beta (subtitle and audio issues). It also fixes some things for older Apple TVs if you’re running the HEVC transcoding server preview. So fingers crossed, you won’t have much longer to wait.

That all sounds good but just to clarify, does 8.44 fix the video stuttering issue?

This is what beta testers are testing today, but in my personal tests it has.

I am so glad I didn’t buy a new Apple TV model. I was wondering if this would help fix the issue. Per the above it won’t help. I have even debated ditching them for Roku since this problem is so annoying. Not sure when 8.44 comes out but I hope soon.

I bough my ATV like 2 years ago and plex has not worked ever since, about 1/5 of the moves work to watch the rest is stuttering.
Got 1000/1000 network and internet and yet it also complains about network speed.
And M3 max as Plex server so the power is there too even if I needed to transcode, but I don’t.

For Plex - very difficult.

They should hire the Infuse devs as consultants.

8.44 has made no difference whatsoever. Some videos (the same ones as always) stutter from the very beginning. And All 4k/hevc videos still stutter after resuming from sleep. Must force quit the app and relaunch the video for it to play properly again.

I have left a 1-star review on the Apple TV app and will leave it until this issue is resolved.

To be clear the 8.44 release does not contain the Experimental Player`, unless your a TestFlight Beta tester. The Experimental Player does not exhibit Stutter in the ATV 4K models.

well what are they waiting for, surely it doesn’t break the app any worse than it already is.

From what I have read a release is going to be available early in the new year. The attention at present is with the new audio renderer, HDR fallback for DV, Live TV and MPEGTS.

Just started having this issue, media that played fine a few weeks ago now stutters right from the beginning, quite frustrating!
Every 4k HDR media seems to stutter now.

Why would they prioritize a new Audio Renderer, HDR Fallback for DV and Live TV and MPEGTS over stuttering of video playback. That doesn’t make any sense at all. Most users have either a Dolby 5.1 setup or a sound bar which both work fine with the current version of the app. Video stuttering is currently the biggest issue but they seem to deprioritize it over these other non-critical issues. I don’t get it.
