Video stuttering since version 8.18 of the Apple TV app

Also mention newly introduced problems as well, btw, the stuttering is still there just with less frequency.
It took years for Plex team to pick this issue up and the beta is in beta stage for months already, so, I also keep my hopes up but I won’t waste my time and nerves by using inferior Plex player and rather go with Infuse.

I made a small sample of the worst offending video I have come across so far and would be curious to hear how it works for everyone else. my appletv 2021 barely manages single-digit frames per second, not an exaggeration at all. And it isn’t because of the panning, the entire episode plays like that.

This same video plays perfectly everywhere else. Plex with the “old” native player, infuse, VLC and IINA on my Mac, etc, etc.

Each to there own, I’m currently impressed at recent development with the Experimental Player.

Just tested your sample and there is still a slight bit of stuttering. Being Zoom it may be partly responsible. I have a 1080p copy that exhibits less of a stutter almost perfect but still evident.

I’m going to find a 4k copy of that file to investigate further.

Cheers

what Apple TV are you using?

I will say that videos obtained from “secondary sources” of Hulu content in 4K with HDR10+ have often been mis-muxed in the past and numerous series have issues when playing back on Apple and Amazon devices.

To correct the issue, extract the hevc layer from the file into it’s own hdr.hevc file and the audio into its own mka/m4a file using something like MKVTools or in the case of an mp4, Subler. Then use something like MKVToolNIX to create a brand new MKV file bringing in both the new HEVC and M4A/MKA files.

That should correct your extreme stutter in Hulu “recorded” 4K HDR files.

I’m popping in to back you up. There’s far too much toxic positivity on these forums, especially the people from the “beta test group”.

Plex had years to care about their paying users and they chose to ignore it. Beta testing has been going on for 6+ months and the thread hasn’t been updated in over week by anyone. The last reply from a Plex employee was over two weeks ago.

Infuse doesn’t release such a garbage quality product and charges less money. Their development is also much faster.

Plex, at this point, is a joke. I develop software myself for a living and I would be embarrassed if I handled one of my products like the Plex team has.

Infuse is better in many ways, but also worse in many ways. It’s not a complete solution.

Agreed. I don’t understand how they’ve been working on this “fix” since March and there has still been nothing released. It seems like they’re working on issues completely unrelated to videos not playing. Meanwhile my Apple TV sits here useless.

What the actual … ? Contribute with what ? There were numerous people reposting this over the years and providing various data just to be ignored. People tried.

That user you replied to is one of the toxic positivity people from “the beta test group”. That thread is a mess. Every time I’ve posted there criticizing the non-action of Plex staff, people like that user report my posts and they’ve all been removed.

Sorry to hear you feel mistreated or misunderstood.
While I can sympathize with your frustration, please understand that comments like „it’s garbage compared to X“, „it’ll never work/happen“ aren’t contributing to the discussion in that beta thread and have therefore been removed.
Your constructive feedback and contribution to that thread will be welcome.

Nobody will stop you from expressing your opinions, just don’t try to hijack a thread. That is unless you insult individuals or groups … expect those to be moderated / deleted (from what i could see, one of the mentioned deletes might be due to that).

I completely agree with the general sentiment here. It is absolutely bonkers that this has been broken for almost 2 years without any improvement. I think the beta testing team simply enjoys the process and doesn’t actually want to fix anything because then they won’t have anything to do. I work in software delivery and if we left a broken application in production for this long without any incremental fix or workaround we’d all be fired. I’ve been using Infuse for 18 months and though it plays the videos flawlessly, the user experience isn’t nearly as good as plex. I use plex on my Roku TV’s in other rooms in the house but my primary TV uses the Apple TV 4K 3rd Gen so I’m forced to continue to use Infuse.

The Beta Testing Team seems to be all over the place trying to address every little minor issue people report when the stuttering issue is the #1 issue that is making the app unusable. If I ever find a viable alternative to Plex I’ll be swiching.

I was actually shocked to find out how long this problem with Video stuttering on AppleTV has been going on. My bad. I invested in a media server, loaded plex up, put away my movies and stuttering. I have tried the numerous suggested settings fixes but still an issue. People have been saying to switch to infuse but that defeats the purpose of having a single solution like Plex. I wonder why more resources are not put on this to just get it fixed once and for all? Maybe I should consider Jellyfin? I just don’t want to have to switch platforms.

I’ve been using Plex for many years to organize my files and Infuse as a player lately. It’s really shocking to see that the Plex Apple TV app still has issues with the playback. Almost every file I play is affected by the stuttering problem. Playback issues in particular should be priority number one. What good is a nice GUI if every file stutters?

Look into Infuse, I haven’t made the jump but apparently it works with no problem. I signed up for Plex a year ago not knowing about this problem, and thought this would have long been fixed by now. I don’t want new and great features, I want the existing features to work properly.

don’t worry they were hard at work on real important things like another UI shuffle and social networking.

I bought a new apple tv assuming plex would work in it, but soon noticed this annoying stuttering to various degrees. Ended up buying infuse which works flawlessly, but doesnt have all the functions. I also already paid for plex pass so kinda feels like im getting ripped off. How can a bug like this on such a popular device go unfixed for so long?

Been like this for over two years now. It’s ridiculous and grows even more so by the day.

At least one scenario with stuttering is extremely reproducible too. if the Apple TV goes to sleep with a 4k/HEVC video paused it will permanently stutter after you resume 100% of the time. The only way to fix it is to force close the app and reopen it. And for those of us who have short screensaver settings (like you probably want for OLEDs), this happens quite often.

I even bought a brand new Apple TV a couple months ago in case the new hardware made a difference, but nope.

So what kind of comments do help? multiple people have tried positively contributing to troubleshooting this issue over the last year-plus, and Plex interaction has been zero since march. They say they fixed thermal throttling and apparently washed their hands of the problem. Well, that’s not enough as evidenced by the many comments since march.

Per their official recommendations we’re not supposed to start a new thread for similar issues, but then they completely ignore the thread that exists.

@hsousa can you tell us if this issue is still being tracked?
