Video stuttering since version 8.18 of the Apple TV app

Do you have the names of some movies you tested that reproduced the micro stutter?

@ShaGe I had an idea that might help. If you have an iPhone could you do a 60fps video recording of the issue? Perhaps proping your phone up on something to keep it still.

Also, do you have a UHD or BD REMUX of Avatar 2009? I have tested my personal rip of it and the beginning panning shots over Pandora have no stutter that I can see in either Infuse or Plex on the 2023 Apple TV 4K. Perhaps if you do have this movie you could test it as well?

As soon as I can reliably see the issue, I can then work with developers to debug and fix the issue.

I have the same issue, and notice it on pretty much everything I play. I have been using infuse because of it which has no issues.
Last night I thought I’d try Plex again and straight away frame skip issues.

LG B7 ISF Expert Trumotion Off real cinema on

I seem to get heating issues with my 2022 model that also affects network connection randomly as well, maybe that doesn’t help with hardware decoding on this model…

I believe everyone agrees that the issue only impacts the Plex app on the Apple TV 4K. Infuse works perfectly and so far it seems most people with this issue are using Infuse to mitigate the issue since all videos play flawlessly on the Apple TV 4K Infuse app.

I don’t have this issue on my UHD Remux of Avatar. However, I notice this doesn’t always happen int he same place on my videos. Sometimes it’s gone altogether and other times it happens pretty often. Lately, I’n noticing it more and more on 480p content and less on 2160p content. But since this started, I have seen it at all resolutions at some point. Again, only with the Plex app.

Sorry my comment was more stating that I could not see any difference between Infuse or Plex. Neither showed the stuttering.

I don’t have a copy of that film, but I feel like I should be able to recreate it across a number of films. I’m a little swamped this week, but I should be able to record a few short videos of it happening on my iPhone on a few different films later this week.

I think I managed to reproduce the issue with the 1080p Remux of Planet Earth II - S01E01. In the open shots when the camera is panning and the balloon is moving, It seems like there is a shuddering as if its not playing at the correct frame rate. The same video in Infuse doesn’t appear to show this, but I might be grasping at straws here…

In the link here, I have two 4K 60fps test recordings I did with my iPhone that capture the opening shot in Plex and Infuse. I would be keen to see if this is the issue or just my eyes playing tricks…

It looks like it to me, but I’ll say that is much more minor than what I’d normally have. Maybe the iPhone masks it a little, did it look more pronounced in person?

Hi, I have never had this issue till yesterday, after playing around with transcoder settings for what ever reason. Anyway Transcoder Quality is by default Automatic I have always had it set as Prefer higher Quality. My assumption this maybe the issue and why I have never had the issue prior.

I see the stuttering in the video and it is similar with what I’ve experienced but not quite as drastic.

Will test when I get home

In addition to using the Old Video Player and Old Audio Engine, this recommendation by SE56 to change the transcoder quality setting away from Automatic seems to have improved the micro-stuttering issue for me (but not completely fixed, as mroy5150 mentioned). I have several Apple TVs and this issue is only happening with the newest model (2022 AppleTV 4K).

Yes , I use the New Players and have the video on Apple TV 4K set to Dolby Vision. Which is tagged on LG OLED. I hope this issue is resolved soon as there are so many Plex subscribers affected by this problem

I’m actually using the new Apple TV 4K with an LG OLED, as well. I’ve turned off all the smart features on the LG. Been a constant struggle testing many variations of settings on both the Apple TV 4K and within the Plex app to try to fix the micro-stuttering issue. What video and audio settings for the Apple TV 4K, in particular, have you settled into? I’m currently using Format-4K HDR (was assuming I should stay away from Dolby Vision with Plex); Match Content-Range & Frame Rate; Chroma-4:2:2; Audio Format-Dolby Digital 5.1 (have a basic soundbar that doesn’t play well with Atmos).

Thanks for looking into this. I was able to do a bit more testing and recorded a few videos as well. I found sometimes the problem wasn’t as obvious in the recordings as it was in person, so I uploaded two that show the issue the most.

I tested the following titles, that I have ripped all myself using MakeMKV:

The Age of Innocence (Criterion Blu-ray release)
The Graduate (Criterion Blu-ray release)
Chungking Express (Criterion Blu-ray release)
The Worst Person in the World (Criterion Blu-ray release)
The Master (Blu-ray release)
Whiplash (UHD Blu-ray)
Phantom Thread (UHD Blu-ray)
Dunkirk (UHD Blu-ray)

On the UHD rips it would happen every few minutes, on the HD rips more often (10-30 seconds). The two files I have attached it happens a lot, but that isn’t to say that these rips are more problematic. If I play them back again from the start they might be better behaved this time.

I mentioned before they tend to happen more for me if I resume from Continue Watching. I also checked all these titles on my Plex app on Shield, Plex on Tizen, and Infuse with no issues.

One thing to flag — I tried a few with the new player turned off to force AVPlayer and The Age of Innocence still stuttered (but a bit less). However, that went away when I left AVPlayer on and forced it to transcode. This title had no issues on Samsung/Infuse/Shield, though.

Getting the same playback issues on the 2022 Apple TV 4K. Some HEVC UHD videos playback stuttering with audio out of sync. The same videos play fine in Emby and Infuse.

I also experience the same problem with Plex on the latest Apple TV 4K, I have tried practically all possible combinations, and all videos in 4K HDR and DV suffer from a small stuttering, it is very frustrating to check that the rest of the video applications do not suffer from this problem, and really a shame, I would love to continue using Plex on the Apple TV but with this problem watching content is quite unpleasant.

I think the apple tv app v8.25-6861 resolved this with tvos v16.6-20m73 solved this issue for me.

Resolved is only when there is no adjustment required.
