Video stuttering since version 8.18 of the Apple TV app

I don’t notice it, anymore, so for me it seems resolved. App updated a day or two ago, and it just works, now.

I’m on server version 1.32.6.7468 on a linux host.

Cool I will check it out

That server version was rolled back by Plex

They actually pulled that version as I guess some were having issues with transcoding, and I dont think I can give you a copy (nor should you trust me to) due to the ToS.

check the frame rate, im having the exact (i think) issue on android-tv (chromecast 4k and sony TV all latest version)
for me its only x265 content, and often older movies - pre 2010 really
I had to use VLC or windows properties to get the full frame rate, plex only shows 3 decimal places.. 23.976024 were good and this was bad 23.976216 stuttered weirdly during playback (totally fine on windows, LG and Samsung)

thats consistent with my post stuttering happening on android / Sony too… its the frame rate … last 3 decimal places …

happy to help this issue is with Android as well… same issue… narrowed down to this is the only difference in files and consistently will have the same effect , see screen shot in above post

Just wanted to pitch in that I am so happy there is finally some attention on this. I’ve been reporting this issue for months at this time and always ppl just responded in “no problems here” fashion, I started to think I might be paranoid or it’s my setup but no, I switched to infuse and since then my life was beautiful.
Really hoping this gets fixed. Previously I used old player as workaround but since last tvOS updates or something it stopped working with my files so have to rely on new player.

This is still happening for me but I haven’t updated the server in a while. Let me try and see if that helps.

It won’t

Still stuttering like hell on tvOS 17

You’re right! It didn’t.

I switched back from Infuse because I wanted to have two part episodes and Infuse doesn’t support that yet (Log Lady intros for Twin Peaks). I ripped the discs myself, encoded to HEVC, and lo and behold it’s still stuttering here 6 months later. Maybe even worse on TVOS 17. I’m pretty disappointed. I can’t think of a good reason this hasn’t been fixed yet.

Still stuttering on TV0S17 with latest ATV Plex App.

Solution found!

It’s thermal throttling. :fire:

I turned my AppleTV on its side, pointed a fan on it, and absolutely cannot get a frame to drop. I’m running a test without the fan now.

Not the solution for most of us as we get it on all types of files and it’s not actual frame drop.

No, it’s really not thermal throttling. At least for the specific issue this thread is about.

And for a few reasons:

  • The issue was introduced with a specific version of the Apple TV app (8.18)
  • The issue is apparent immediately, no need to wait 20 min or so.
  • The issue affects many (all?) types of content. 1080p, 4K, SDR, HDR, etc. Not just 4K HDR.

This issue has been significantly worse over the last week or so. And no it’s not thermal throttling because it’s still fine on infuse and always has been.

Agreed, since tvOS 17 the issue has been made even worse on the 3rd gen Apple TV to the point where it’s an absolute horrible experience with Plex. Not sure why this is taking so long to figure out when it happens on every media file type and is seen instantly.

I am not sure it’s thermal throttling as has been mentioned to be a cause, at least not for most as it happens right away. And if it is, it’s odd that a 2017 4K Apple TV does not exhibit this stuttering issue as it runs significantly hotter on tvOS 17 than the 3rd gen and is much less efficient. But I suppose trying any fix for this scenario is a good idea to narrow down certain possible causes.

I currently just got fed up and went back to the 2017 Apple TV 4K as it plays flawlessly. Although it’s pretty sad how I have to downgrade so much to get a consistent Plex experience. Really hoping for a fix on this issue soon.

Courtesy of a shoddy non-native (vs Metal) approach from a lazy Plex dev team.

FYI: The 2017 model has active cooling, gen 3 does not. And much of the gen 3’s increased efficiency comes from the improved hardware decoding that the Plex app does not use.

Simple test for you folks. Put the AppleTV on its side and point a fan at it. I can’t get it to stutter when I do that.
