Video Stuttering

Server Version#: 1.20.3.3437
Player Version#:

Hi - I am a new Plex user and streaming from a 2017 imac. I watching my first tv show last night from a show that I loaded to Plex. This is a 720p mp4 file and i have noticed some stuttering every 4 or 5 seconds. Some research showed that some people have had this issue and changed to lower versions but I’m not sure if this is a version that is known to be effected or if I should be trying something else. Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks,
Fred

Welcome to Plex.
Stuttering playback can have a variety of causes. The most common ones are insufficient network bandwidth or a computer that is not powerful enough to transcode the video to a requested format.

Network

Wireless networks are susceptible to “environmental influences” (e.g. bad reception, walls/furniture, interferences from neighboring WLAN networks on the same band/channels…). For your 720p mp4 file you should usually not need super much bandwidth… it’s still worth to double-check.

Transcoding

If your TV does not support the media as-is, your Plex Media Server will attempt to optimize it for that client. Such restrictions can be related to the media file container (e.g. mkv/mp4/avi), the video/audio/subtitle formats embedded in that file…
That being said… a 2017 iMac should be capable enough to run circles around that 720p mp4 file (if transcoding should be required).

You can obtain more information on what might be causing those playback issues by opening a 2nd window and navigate to the Plex Media Server dashboard. There you’ll e.g. find a “now playing” tile that can be expanded to display details about that particular playback session.

What information is showing in the “now playing” tile for that playback on the Plex server dashboard?
