Videos played stuttering but no dropped frames, and no subtitles

In the past week or so, I am now having an issue of frequent stuttering with most TV shows I am currently watching. I checked and there are no frames lost. I’ve realized that if I exit the video, then resume playing again after a second or two, it solves the issue (temporarily).

I am using a DS918+.

I haven’t been able to find an answer anywhere else, so I am coming here in hopes you may have one!

Just to note, I have recently cleaned my Synology NAS of all particles and dust.

Which clients are having the problem?

Any specific type of video or audio, or does it happen with all media files?

If others can reproduce, it will help with problem diagnosis.

All video files are having the same issue.

I primarily use my Xbox Series X to stream these videos.

I am having the same issue with both my Xbox Series X and my Roku Ultra. It seems more common with 1080p content. I use direct play. I have had the same setup for years but in the last couple days 1080p suddenly “jitters” every 10 seconds or so and then with freeze frame but audio will continue.

Some is seriously messed up in the most recent release.

Playing same content from same servers (I have 2 servers, 1 linux, 1 mac) works fine through browser.

Trying same file from both servers from either Roku or Xbox breaks down. It happens to almost all 1080p content so far.

I have attached a log, it looks like the Roku is transcoding and not using Direct Play

So confusing, I have 2 Roku Ultras using the same network with the same server and the same file. One plays perfectly, one drops frames and eventually freezes up.

If both identical machines.

AND

both at same Roku OS version

AND

both at same Plex app version

THEN

It must be the player app settings are different
-or-
(on WiFi --) signal strength / WiFi speed / different TV (behavior)

I have done a factory reset on the flakey Roku, we shall see.

I also use direct play (just checked to confirm) with the content I watch via Plex on my Xbox Series X, which is almost universally all 1080p as well.

I hope there is a fix or update soon; my smart TV has a controller with issues (making selecting anything on Plex a huge chore), and my only other option is my old Xbox One, which I would have to set up again.

Did you figure out if a factory reset helped?

Also, I read in one post that you stated you were using direct play, and in another, you stated it was transcoding. Which one is it?

The factory reset of the Roku fixed the issue. My confusion over direct is that it looked from the logs it was NOT direct play but in the Web Portal, it showed DirectPlay working. I dunno.

I now have it resolved on the Roku.

That’s great to hear. I really hope I don’t have to factory reset my Xbox Series X, that would be a pain.

I guess I’ll hope for an update and also hope that someone finds a fix, if there is, another way.
