I reset the TV to defaults, and proceeded to start up PLEX, again. Ever since I was led to install the Plex Server on my Macbook Pro (now the latest 16), I haven’t been able to connect with the TV. Before the reset, it would tell me it couldn’t reach the network, though both WIFI and RJ-45 networking show properly. After reset, it simply tells me it can’t reach PLEX.tv (presumably for the initial login setup, after the reset), and that my firewall may be to blame.
Note that my other devices (Macs) can connect to my PLEX server and play, no problem. The firewall settings on both the router and the PLEX Server Mac are wide open. (Server settings also say I can’t do remote access.)
Router is a telus T3200M, and also brings in their OptikTV.
Because other devices can connect, this would seem to be isolated to the Visio TV. I can’t find any way to reload/reinstall the PLEX player on it, and I can’t find any way to troubleshoot on the TV.
I purchased the full meal deal PLEX just so I wouldn’t have to buy yet another device
I would have expected that PLEX would always be compatible with a TV that it already ran on - grandfathered. Or maybe that the TV would be upgradeable in software (or hardware?) to continue working. 55" Smart TV purchased just a few years ago for over $1000
I’ve been connecting my laptop to the HDMI port, lately, but it’s obviously inconvenient. And if I get one of the devices mentioned to connect to the TV, it will be using inferior WIFI as opposed to direct ethernet connection.
Yeah it’s unfortunate. The main issue is that some of these TVs are using old technology that it is no longer compatible with Plex Media Server. There’s nothing we could do to the app to make it work at this point - the TV manufacturer would need to update their firmware.
It is what it is. Just have to move on. I expect this is planned obsolescence, and I’m not about to get a new television, when the “old” one still works for everything else…
Yep, having a similar problem - Plex stopped working on my old Samsung TV and the manual configuration work-arounds aren’t working (and nobody seems able to help with my queries).
I’ve bitten the bullet and bought a new TV as I couldn’t even get the Fire TV stick to fit in the HDMI port, but how long before that becomes obsolete? The last one lasted 8 years, will this one last as long? or as I suspect, less? Suddenly what was an electrical item with a fairly long lifecycle has become a technology item with built in obsolescence.
I’m having a real downer on technology at the moment
Per the suggestion, I just ordered a Roku device. I’ve been hooking my laptop up to the HDMI port and using Plex that way, but it is a pain. This time, convenience rules, but as a TV, the Visio is still going strong after 5 years, so I see no reason to replace it (at what cost?).
