Visualisation of Plex movie library data using Tableau (and how to view your own library)

As the Transmogrify for Plex Chrome extension no longer works with current versions of Plex, I decided to make a visualisation of Plex movie data using Tableau.

Here is a visualisation of a sample data set

You can use this visualisation for your own library, with freely-available software.

Instructions

Get the Tableau workbook and data file:

  1. Go to the Tableau workbook

  2. Click on ‘Download Workbook’

  3. Download the sample data file (‘movies.xlsx’)

Update the data file with your data:

  1. Install the ExportTools Plex plugin

  2. In Plex, go to channels, click on settings for ExportTools and select ‘Level 5’ for ‘Movie Export Level’ - click save

  3. Open the ExportTools channel, click on your movie library to export the data

  4. Open the sample data file (‘movies.xlsx’), delete everything from column D onward and paste in the data from your export file

  5. Type your genres in column A to generate totals (this part handles movies with multiple, custom genres)

Tableau Public:

  1. Doanload and install Tableau Public (free)

  2. Open the workbook in Tableau Public (‘plex movies.twbx’)

  3. Go to ‘Data Source’

  4. Select ‘movies.xlsx’

  5. Go to the ‘Plex data’ tab to visualise your data

Thanks for this. Really great way to view your data
