Volume controls pass through to TV remote on some movies

Setup:
Server - Win 10 server
Player - Shield TV
TV - 4k Hisense (fairly cheap one)

Some Files use the Shield remote for volume controls (AAC)

However on other files I get the msg “The App is set for Surround Sound, Use TV Remote” (MLP FBA 16-ch / AC-3) This happens on either audio stream

How do I stop this happening?
I only use the (poor) TV speakers

In Plex Settings
Video Quality - Home Streaming = Maximum
Audio Quality - Remote Streaming = Original
Audio Boost = None
Audio Passthrough = HDMI

Thanks

I don’t know the exact setting. So I’ll describe the concept.

It sounds like AC-3 is being passed through to the TV.

Because PMS or Shield is configured in your case for passing thru AC-3, by extension that means “pass it thru and don’t remix it in any way including volume.”

AAC is not a codec that is passed thru under any conditions.

So it sounds like you can succeed by stopping AC-3 and DTS tracks from being passed thru the Shield. Some of the Plex settings that have been known to affect passthru are named Original, one of which you quoted above. When it asks for original quality, that means pass it thru if possible. Other setting names relating to passthru could include words like Optical or maybe HDMI Audio or ARC.

Try to find something yourself that doesn’t pass it through but also avoids the dreaded Transcoding on the server. You’d prefer to let the Shield transcode it if that makes sense.

Good luck!

Thanks, so obvious
