Hello all. I am just getting started and have been ripping DVDs to use via PLEX but I have a few purchased movies on VUDU any way to get them to play here ? I found VUDU on the list and checked the box bit I am not sure whats next. Also any way to download them via PLEX to my external hard drive ? Thanks in advance.
You cannot download and play movies from streaming services such as Vudu, Netflix, etc. Those are encrypted via DRM and Plex cannot play them.
Plex does have linking to streaming services. If you search for a movie and it is available on one of your streaming services, Plex will launch the app for that service. Not all services allow “deep linking,” so it may launch to the service home page instead of directly to the movie.
Just so I was clear these are not rentals . I have purchased them in the past and they are stored there. Does that make any difference ? My concern is it was not VUDU when I purchased some of them and I fear I may lose them if it changes owners again . Thanks,.
Makes no difference.
Also, read the fine print with Vudu, et al. You don’t own the movies. If a service loses streaming rights, the movies will disappear from your account at that service.
Thanks. Seems Odd they use the term PURCHASE if its not yours.
Yep. They are diluting the term “purchase” by putting in their terms of service all kinds of caveats that restrict when and where the “purchase” may be used. Also, they reserve the sole right to revoke your “purchase” at any time, for no reason at all.
(At least, no reason that was your fault. They usually have a reason to remove a movie on their service, and it’s because of the dispute with the author for the sale rights of the product. A particular book sold on Amazon’s ebook marketplace was actually DELETED from people’s kindle devices if you connected it to the internet. Usually when a book is removed for sale, you should at LEAST be able to re-download it from the respective store afterwards, you just cannot purchase a “new” copy of it for your account. But in this one case, even people’s downloaded copies were actively deleted.)
I think technically, what you are purchasing is a license to use the product, not the product itself. It’s not what we usually mean when it comes to purchase, but hey, words are hard for these companies, and they have lawyers who write up legalese that can drown an elephant in the ink used to write them.
