Waking Plex Server - External IP Changing

I am currently able to wake my Plex server (windows 10) at home via my Iphone using a WOL app. I have port 9 forwarded in my router and DSL modem.

Challenge is my external IP address changes. I am talking about the IP address shown on the http://www.whatsmyip.org/ website. I may have 50.50.253.155 then it may change to 50.50.228.75.

How can i keep this address consistent? Any free services out there?

Most routers have a buildin feature to update dyndns providers with the current WAN ip.

I am using afraid.org since years now:
http://freedns.afraid.org/

Register an account to become a member - free or paid is up to you.
The starting point is the “Registry” item in the navigation menu.

If you google for the terms “free dyndns providers” you will find even more.

Thanks for the info. I am trying to figure out how this ties in with what I am looking to do. My external IP will always change and I need that external IP address in my WOL app on my phone. How will setting the dynamic DNS accomplish a static external IP. Sorry, newb here on this subject.

I have a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 and it looks to have a Dynamic DNS page ready for setup as shown below. Looks like I can work through that link, correct?

Yep, it appears that they operate their own DDNS powered by the DDNS provider No-IP.
Seems like you can even register for a DDNS account on the page you posted.

Don’t bother with any other Dyndns Provider and use whatever Netgear has buildin support

The DynDNS-like service is free with every plex-tv account.
https://plex.tv/api/resources/?X-Plex-Token=your_own_X-Plex-Token&includeHttps=1

just filter the XML according to Device name=SERVER_NAME and local="0"
and you’ll get the current public IP of your server (and thus, your router as well)

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/204059436-Finding-an-authentication-token-X-Plex-Token

Make sure to not publicly store the URL containing your X-Plex-Token!
It is like a general key to your account.

Now you just need to figure out how to get the IP address from the XML into your Wake-On-Lan app.

The page you posted does exactly what’s needed. Use whatever they provide  Don’t bother with any other DDNS provider.

It allows to have a static domain name , which will be updated by the dyndns client in your router whenver you WAN Ip changes.

Just enter the domain name instead of the ip into your WOL client.

I completed the 30 second registration. Will see how it works. Thanks!
