My IP address is dynamic, that is - my provider will change it without notification. Sometimes this happens when they do a reboot or there has been a power outage. In the ios mobile app, where you add connections, you do not have the option of adding a dynamic connection. When my router detects a change or at random times, it will send the IP address that has been assigned to DyDNS where i have a url text address to get to my site. If there are any changes my xxx.yy.com url that I own will reflect the current address of my site. Unfortunately when I try to add a connection address, it only allows numeric ip address. As a suggestion, could that be changed to allow either?
That applies to at least 90% of all Plex server operators.
This use case is already covered by Plex’s regular feature set.
You don’t need to use a DynDNS or similar address.
All you need to do is start the Plex server and activate remote access.
The server will determine your public IP and store it on plex.tv, from where it will be given to entitled clients.
If your public IP is changed, plex.tv will notice it after ~30 minutes and update the record on plex.tv automatically.
There is no need to define your server’s address in the settings of your Plex clients manually. This abilty is only for very rare network configurations.
All you generally need to do is to sign in the client into your plex.tv account. It will automatically obtain all addresses of Plex servers to which it has been granted access.
