Wanted: Freebase Metadata Agent For Music Videos

Pointer To Feature Request Thread
Freebase now supports Music Videos (i.e. songs like they used to show on MTV, not concerts or long form videos which are entirely different).

In case someone is interested in writing a metadata agent for this, I started this thread in Feature Requests:

http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/23564-freebase-music-video-scanner/

I will work on this when I have free time

That’s awesome… please contact me anytime if you need help beta testing! I’m eager to help.

Ooooh, this would be frackin awesome! Can’t wait to be able to finally have my music videos organized correctly.

I was taking a look through the Freebase database of music videos. I can say that there collection of music videos is scarce at best. Most of the data is missing from the music videos that they do have. What information would you guys be looking to pull down from Freebase? The library is not set up well for music videos either. Where would the artist go? In the directors spot? I could write an agent pretty quickly, but I think its a waste with Freebase having so few music videos and poor information.

The Music Video section just opened up, so there’s not much data there (actually only 119 entries as of today), but I think having a way to use the data would certainly encourage people to add more. I know if it worked out I would have 2000+ videos to enter, and knowing how I like my Plex files set up just so, it would be a pleasure.

The most important data I’d like is: Artist, Title, Release Date/Year, Director, and Description/Article. There are also fields for Performances (i.e. non-artist actors who appear in the video, etc), Choreographer, Crew, Genre and Subject that would be interesting to search on (once more data is added).

As far as where the fields go, I guess in my case the agent would have to parse the “Artist - Title” portion to separate Artist and Title, then do the search, then add them back together to use “Artist - Title” as the movie title.

Other than the artist question, I would treat it just like a film, as they are really just little films, with a soundtrack, directors, extras, etc.

On the other hand, the Plex Music section has support for an Artist->Album->Tracks hierarchy, perhaps this could be adapted to videos more easily then the movies section?

Ideally Plex would have a separate section for Music Videos, but until then I would be satisfied with a workaround. What do you guys think?

Welcome to Freebase y’all.

Here’s the basic layout of the properties associated with the type ‘Music Video’:

Artist : Artist that performs the song (but may or not be performing it in the video)

Initial release date : The first time this video was aired/displayed to the public.

Song : The composition (‘song’) this video is based upon. Note this is not a unique property, rarely there could be multiple songs included in a single music video if the video is a collection of several songs joined in some manner other than a medley (A medley is usually in of itself a single musical track, eg. David Lee Roth’s I Ain’t Got Nobody/Just A Gigolo" is a single track comprised of a well-known Louis Prima medley of two jazz compositions). Modern examples of multiple song videos are the mashup videos.

Performances : A performance in this video (either acting, dancing, etc.)

Directed by : The director of the music video.

Choreographer : Person who designs the choreography that appears in the music video.

Crew : Crew (other than directors, performers, and choreographers) who worked on this video.

Music video genre : Genre of this music video (concert performance, comedy, parody, dystopian, etc.)

Music video subject : Subject or ideas represented in this music video

(All of the above information can be found by the schema page for the type ‘Music Video’ at Music Video )

Example music video topic: Coffee & TV music video by Blur

Song means composition topic and not the track of a specific album so for the Music Video of the above ‘Coffee & TV’ the song topic is linked to (if it can’t be found in the search box [Be sure! many topics exist already on Freebase] you will need to create it and can from within the search box for the song property). Don’t link to the 'Coffee & TV music track from the album 13 as that’s a recorded instance of the composition/song.

Artist is obviously Blur.

Director is usually a single person or a set of single person topics, but in this case (for now at least) it’s to the topic about the partnership of individuals who directed the video Hammer & Tongs

Another good example, though a bit busy due to it’s better data already asserted, is Thriller, which is co-typed as a film (due to it’s special nature it was originally a short film with a musical video sequence).

Again, this new type and it’s properties are pretty new to Freebase, and so not too many topics exist (partly this is due to not too many good online sources of music videos exist that are restrictively licensed and Wikipedia in all it’s inherent wisdom had decided to keep all music video information conflated in the topic about the song/single for the most part, ugh.).

Any thought on this? I don’t want to add too many entries before there’s some kind of guideline on how to add the data so it eventually works with Plex…

Still hoping something like this comes out soon enough.

Me too.... weird that it seems music videos are not popular at all...

I think they are quite popular, but just can’t seem to get anybody to either write an agent for them or a site with enough information that could work well.

I’ve come across a couple other sites that have a ton of info, but I’m not sure how well they actually work for making a MD agent for as I have no clue as how any of it works. But these are the 2 sites:

http://www.mvdbase.com/ - has a ton of info, but seems to be falling apart. Not sure if it’s being updated anymore and I seem to find a ton of errors on many of the pages.

http://www.musicvdb.com/ - has a lot of videos, just not a lot of info on each one. updating anything here seems like it kind of sucks “Please note that all submissions are reviewed, and may take up to 14 days to appear online.”

If someone made an agent for FreeBase videos, I bet it would start to take off, but when there isn’t much info there, it’s hard to justify it. But without an agent, it’s hard to justify taking the time to input all of the info we have for the videos we own. Catch 22.

Any chance that someone has become interested in doing this yet?

I have hundreds and hundreds of music videos that I would love to scrape and have looking nice in Plex.

If someone is willing to do something for this, I’m more than willing to input all of the info from the videos that I have.

XBMC comes with an MTV scraper for music videos… Since they are based on the same platform is there a way to easily port the XBMC one over to plex?

The MTV API has been closed for quite some time, so I am not sure how XMBC is getting its data from MTV. I would also like to see this as well.

I never understood why the music agents applied to MP3 (music) files can’t be equally applied to MP4 (music video) files. The data is basically the same and the MP4 container is very flexible when it comes to metadata. The audio could be analyzed for ID purposes.

Anyone had any luck with this?
