Ok, my frustration level like countless other has about reached it max with ROON. Their concept is great however their seemingly half baked systems and apps cause too many problem that seem to come and go. Worst part about ROON is their absolute horrid support system. Their is no way to get timely meaningful support if problems do arise. You post an issue in the “Fourm” and you may get a response in a few days, weeks, months, or simply not at all and I am sick if it.
So with that I am interested in coming over to Plex. I would like to use the hardware I invested in to build my ROON Rock Sever based on the intel NUC platform. Is their a guide or primer that shows how to convert a Intel NUC to a plexserver? Also, can the plexserver redirect streaming service content back out over the internet to a mobile device app in the same manner that Roon ROCK server can to the Roon ARC app? Any guidance would be appreciated.
Plex servers run on all kinds of systems, so before you do a proper install on your NUC you could try installing the server on any convenient system you have. It can even be your daily driver computer, the server will run in the background without using too many resources, especially for music.
Unfortunately some of the best music features for Plex require Plex Pass but you can still get a good idea of what Plex and the special music client Plexamp are like without the Pass features.
If you like what you see at the free tier you can try buying a month of Plex Pass and letting your server do Sonic Analysis of your music library, which will enable lots of new smart playlist features.

This I cannot help with, I do not use any streaming services with Plex. It has Tidal integration if you are a Tidal subscriber though.
Plex server can stream within your own home to a freakish amount of devices for free, same for Plexamp. This makes it easy for you to try the basic functions. As BanzaiInstitute said the features that make it worth it like streaming outside the house, and sonic analysis, are something you have to have a Plex pass for. Sonic analysis is the real magic. But here comes the surprising part. A lifetime pass is 120 bucks. Best 120 bucks I ever spent.
Some things that are not like Roon, that you need to know. The album art and artist links and being able to dive into the artwork, like a wikipedia of the music you have, and all that stuff, is not at the same level with Plex/Plexamp. Compared to Roon this is very lacking almost doesn’t exist. So if you are big on that you are going to miss it.
Plexamps goal is to get you to your music quickly, get you to discover/rediscover your music and to keep playing music at all costs. If anything you could install Plex on your current computer and add like 2 or 3 albums worth of music and give it a try for free. Sign up for like one month and see how it fits. Start with a small library of like 5 to 10 albums just to get a feel for how it works and what it does. Might be worth it.
Oh you can also set up Plex and Plexamp to work completely without internet connection. There is a way to do this that is posted in the Forums. Its super simple to setup. Good luck. And welcome. You don’t know it yet. But you are gonna get hooked.
I am coming up on my year subscription to qobuz and understand that it does not work with the plex system for streaming but tidal does however so not opposed to switching. Not sure of the high res content of tidal vs qobuz. Just want to make the move before qobuz auto renews.
Does anyone know if there is instructions to install the linux version of plex on the dedicated NUC server I have?
