Watch a live program from the start before it's finished?

I’m doing a bit of research before I go and spend the money to buy a digital tuner and antenna. I’ve had a good hunt around but haven’t been able to find the answer to this question, if I want to watch a live program from the beginning but it’s already half way through, can I do that?

Or if I have a scheduled recording that is already started am I able to watch it while it is still recording?

I have asked the same question and as far as I know, this has not been implemented yet. I asked the same question because I use my HDhomerun to watch football and hate sitting around for 3 hours when I can watch a game in like an hour by coming in late and skipping a lot until I catch up to live. So, as far as I know, it’s coming but not here yet.

Thanks very much for the reply. I’m hoping that someone here that is currently using Plex Live and DVR can confirm for sure.

Appreciate the response, I agree there is nothing worse than just missing the start and then having to wait a few hours until it’s finished…and… spoilers!

That is correct currently you cannot watch it until recording is complete.

If any Plex folks are reading this - this feature is HUGE. Without it, I can’t position this as my central DVR. Gotta start the football game halfway through!

Devs had told me it’s in the pipeline but I have no ETA or additional info.

I’m a big sports nut so this one is big for me as well!

What I do is go to the “grab” folder, where the file is temporarily while it’s recording, and watch the program using VLC.

I have found that I need to exit VLC before the program is finished recording or Plex won’t, or can’t, do the final processing and move it to it’s correct location.

Obviously, this does not work remotely. But it’s my fix for when I get home and a program is in process of being recorded.

Interestingly I just happened to try watching a program from the Program Guide that I’m recording, it’s an hour long show and it’s already 20 mins into it. Lo and behold it plays from the start!

I’m sure that wasn’t the behavior previously. I’m watching it from my Android phone Plex client.

I have just tried it on the web client. No dice there, it kicks in live.

What client?

Plex client on my Android phone is 6.5.3.2115.

My Plex Server version is 1.9.5.4323.

There has been some talk on these forums that Android (or maybe it was Android TV) would let you watch a show that was recording, but no other clients.
