I, like many people, like watching sports from the beginning of a game. But I can’t always be home to catch the beginning of the game.
Why can’t I start a recording while it is still recording?
I am coming from EyeTV use for over 13 years. I am having to switch because I use a mac in the USA, and the current company doesn’t support people like me anymore. This was never an issue with EyeTV.
I am liking Plex overall. I love that they got the grid guide view (a must), and I like having access to my files wherever I happen to be. But I need that ability to watch and record at the same time, of the same program, whenever I want to start up that program (2 minutes or 2 hours into the program)
I have seen other comments that are related to this. Is there a potential fix for this coming soon? I don’t want to switch to something else and my month subscription is quickly coming up. I was strongly considering a lifetime subscription, but… I would like to see something from plex on this. I Have read a number os other threads and there isn’t any plex feedback that I can find.
This feature has been available for, i think, about a year now. My Shield, LG TV, iPhone, Plex Media Player, all support it. Make sure you are on latest PMS (and clients). If you go to the guide and tap to watch something that you are already recording it will prompt you to select “watch from beginning”, or “watch live”.
The recording-in-progress doesn’t appear in my library, so I need to start playback from the guide
When I start playback from the guide, it always starts from Live instead of from the beginning
Maybe this is because I’m using the programming guide “channels” view? When I start playback from something out of my library, I do get the prompt where I can optionally start from the beginning.
Thanks for the 2 responses so far - I don’t get an option to “Watch from the Beginning” when I select the recording. If I choose the channel then I get an error message (I don’t have it in front of me at the moment, but once I do I will include it here). I will see about trying the “library” idea the next time I am recording something.
I hope for a more “straight forward” method in the future.
Perhaps you are running into an issue I encounter: I have several recording schedules set to end late (let’s say 30min after the nominal show ending), but I cannot find a way to start watching a recording during the timeframe after the show ends, but the recording is still going. During that time, the show has not yet appeared in the Library, and attempting to play from the TV Guide doesn’t give an option to play the recording. Is that what you are seeing?
EricKerby - That is what happened last week when trying to watch football. I wish I could figure out how to find it and watch while recording.
I was wondering - does it matter how many tuners I have? I have 2 tuners and both are in use at the same time during football. So, could that be an issue?
I am also having the same problem, using the latest PMS (linuxserver docker), the option is not available on the web player. others seems to be able to bring up that option using other clients (ios, firetv, etc)

i just assumed this would work like my cable’s dvr. very disappointing
ok, looks like this option is only available if you use PMP
in my case, I used a windows PMP, “Enter TV Layout”, Live TV, the show i was testing appeared in the “on right now” row, clicked to open the show in another layout, click the play button then you will see that “play from the beginning” option
