Watch Plex Movies With Friends Remotely

Server Version#: 4.22.2
Player Version#: N/A

Is there some way to stream one movie from plex to multiple people? That way we can all watch movies on Zoom together during this quarantine situation.

There used to be from the web app but it was pretty janky. It did not actually sync up the video with all the streams and it was not used that much so it was eventually removed to simplify things. I know it is something we would like to do again but I don’t think it will be anytime soon.

( I don’t know if there is any third party solution for it)

There are 3rd party solution for this, but I’ve never had a need so I’ve never looked or tracked them. I’ve seen them come through the forums for sure though.

Yes… this would be a fantastic feature… I know Plex VR has ā€˜Watch Together’ so the technology is there, they’d just have to enable it for non VR.

Maybe this could work for you? http://synclounge.tv

I haven’t tried it yet but I was just looking up options for watching Plex with others, so I don’t have to move my live streaming setup just for this, and I came across SyncLounge. I’m probably going to be testing it out in ~30 minutes or so and will report back if I do and have any useful information. I can be forgetful, though, so I wanted to share it in advance so I don’t forget to do that much at least. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, it didn’t work so well. It refused to work with the Apple TV, which was supposedly an issue that was resolved a year ago, so I switched to Android TV (NVIDIA Shield) and it seemed to connect fine. I was able to start watching by controlling things through the site but my friend’s Roku device wouldn’t sync up. She was in the same room as me and everything else was sync’d up but no Plex commands were sync’d with her Roku despite being recognized and set up in exactly the same way. When she tried to do anything she wasn’t able to. It always said that the host had pressed stop, even when I was playing the media.

It might work better if everything is Android-based or if everyone uses the web client since that’s actually a part of SyncLounge. I think I’ll probably just do a private live stream going forward. I might give this a try if everyone is able to use the web client, though. It’d be nice if something like this was a viable solution in some situations, at least.

I’d love this feature or even to sync content streaming through the house.

@sephethus I share my Plex Server remotely by adding users to it and then give them the username and password then they can log into their user space upon which you can share libraries with them, and behold they can either watch the same movie or a different one while you watch another.
Of course this is limited if it’s shared over the internet by upload speed, so I’ve kept everything at 720p, which works great, but at the moment, some Android devices that are connected via WiFi are having issues playing certain files that are encoded in AC3, but hopefully we will have a fix for this in the not to near future.
My server has grown in Tb size with the Quarantine situation and jokingly my family and friends call it ā€œOperation Corona Bingeā€
To set up how I’ve done it, needs a Plex Pass, of which I see you have, and did I read that they are all on the same network too? Streaming shouldn’t be an issue, I have 4 Roku devices in the house, and my Dad back in the Midlands, connects with his 2 Roku’s without an issue. Just make sure the ports are allowed through the router, Upnp normally gets this done, I’m idle you see!! then streaming with managed users is a breeze.

Hope this way helps too??

Besides sync lounge, any other ones?
Bc sync almost never works.

and ive tried a bunch.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I was going to attempt to use SyncLounge but don’t think I will bother now. I looked into their support docs and there does seem to be limited support for players and most of my family are using Plex on a ā€˜broken’ client device e.g. Smart TV or PlayStation!!

It would be a great feature to have within Plex.

I see that plex finally added a ā€œWatch Togetherā€ option. I used it for the first time last night but unfortunately it resulted in the audio constantly cutting out throughout the movie. I assume this is due to its attempts to sync up. Good try Plex. Needs work though.
