Thank God Plex isn’t the only one. The only thing I regret is that I won’t be able to get a refund.
one of the only reasons i still use plex.
Guess I’ll be leaving your platform behind then. Good job you tone deaf leaders at Plex.
If I didn’t already have a lifetime subscription this decision would be the one that made me stop paying the subscription fees. What an asinine decision. I will be looking at the alternatives now after being happy with plex for over 10 years.
This is an awful decision, I love being able to watch things with friends remotely. Removing this feature definitely makes me regret buying Plex Pass.
Judging by a lot of recent decisions, they seem to have completely forgotten this…
Same here as everyone else. This is THE feature I use Plex for. This decision very disappointing and clearly shows some lack of understanding for the features people rely on.
Strongly hoping for a change of course here
This is such a disappointing change. I use watch together VERY regularly (almost daily) with both my friends and my partner. I also have a lifetime plex pass like many other people in this thread, and I’m also now looking into alternatives. It’s the single most-used feature. Retaining it exclusively in the web app is such crap because the web app handles direct play much more inconsistently and I have a bandwidth cap due to not having access to fibre internet. So what’s the point if it works but my server can’t even play our watch together stream because all of the people watching are transcoding – and what’s the point if I can’t also use this feature on my TV or tablet? absolutely absurd decision. If this ends up being a way to make this a plex-pass exclusive feature, I’m really going to lose total faith in this service.
If Plex sticks to this decision, I will no longer be using this software. I simply have 0 use for it.
I’ve already sent an email to billing demanding a refund on my lifetime Plex Pass.
disappointing for sure, i use this feature all the time ![]()
This and Live TV were the two reasons I bought the lifetime Plex Pass. The Live TV doesn’t work for people not in your home, so it was effectively DOA for me, and now they’re killing the Watch Together feature which is how I enjoyed media consumption with my close friends abroad.
This decision effectively kills Plex for me as a media solution. If I could cancel my lifetime Plex Pass, I would do so right now.
This is the final straw for me. Plex just has not been thinking of the end users anymore. It’s time to migrate to a provider who does.
I hope Plex reconsiders its decision to eliminate this feature. Though not perfect and buggy, I’d rather have something with quirks than not at all.
Sorry to hear about your wife.
I think your last point is key though. At some point Plex’s target user switched from those that run and use servers, to those that consume the ad-supported content that all of us simply disable.
Really, when they added that anti-feature, we should have realized the platform we love was dead. I had to make guides for all my users to explain how to disable all that crap.
I’ve been putting off switching for years because Plex just works, but I guess I can’t do that any longer.
I dont understand how removing the feature to watch together will bring us closer together? Is this an early April Fools?
I use this feature at least once a week and althought it’s not perfect it’s much better than “3…2…1…Play” or “I need to pause, okay 3…2…1…Pause”. “Is everyone at the same time??” Really strange move. Some transparency would go a long way
This is the main reason I use plex, I have a lifetime plex pass, because I believed in Plex. But now? I feel betrayed, I use this almost daily. I hope they understand that this is important to a lot of people
It’s not 2020 anymore? What a load of bs, people still use it constantly, people have long distance relationships, friends they can’t hang out with currently, I don’t know man, that’s the most human feature, a feature to connect us to people we love. Back to mindlessly bingeing alone? Hell no. I’ll find another app.
I could write a long post about how Plex has changed over time and continuously makes changes that makes the user experience worse, but the reality is they do not care. The moment they started taking investor money is the moment they sold us all out. It is only a matter of time before they deprecate self-hosted media entirely.
This was literally the only feature Plex offered that kept my friends and family coming back from other alternatives. Now that it is on the way out, we’ll be taking our leave. So long, Plex. It was nice while it lasted.
This is literally the reason I purchased a Plex Pass.
Ridiculous.
I thought they were focusing on monetization to be able to support features for everyone.
Just another example of enshitification.
No Plex pass required for this feature
Absolutely horrible.
