I just requested for a refund, Plex is not what it used to be, they only care about money now, other open source apps have almost reached the level where Plex is.
I never post in forums, but this decision is so stupid, I just had to tell the plex team.
I am very disappointed with this. I love this feature and use it frequently. I hope they reconsider this. Gonna look into Jellyfin I guess.
I have been a Plex admin for 10 years and this was hands down the BEST feature Plex had to offer- opened avenues for my friends and I! Now I have to share the news to them its ending- not our friendship mind you, Plex (after having been a Plex Pass Lifetime member for over 10 years) I will be switching to JellyFin.
Add me to the list of very, very disappointed people (along with my friends and family that use it daily).
Watch Together is the only way that I’m able to watch movies with my family in 2 different languages so that my parents can natively understand them. They’re from India and this feature has completely changed how fully they are able to experience so many movies with us. Plex - PLEASE do not take away the Watch Together feature. My parents are getting older and this will completely get rid of our ability to have virtual movie nights together with them. At the most, restrict it to Plex Pass paid users, but don’t eliminate it entirely.
Terrible decision. Had to sign up to make this known.
I use this featuee to watch films with LDR on a daily basis.
I take it as using Debian 12 for hosting my Media Center/Plex I can block this feature from being removed including on both clienrs we use (TVs)?
Again, this feature should not be removed.
Devastating news for many a long-distance relationship.
If we refuse to update our apps, will the feature continue to work that way?
I constantly use this feature and I am extremely angry not just that the feature is being removed but also at the insulting way it was announced.
“We built this in 2020 when it was needed. Now 5 years later we’re taking it away”. Wow I guess we don’t need it anymore so you’re taking it away? Maybe you should write the real reason you’re taking it away rather than these 3 paragraphs of gobbledygook.
You claim you’re migrating to the new app to speed future development on your marvellous new codebase - so if new development is going to be so fast why not delay the release a few months and implement the important missing features? Why not commit to a near future release of the missing features? Why phrase it as “we aren’t totally ruling out a return some day?” It sounds like you’re leaving the door open just as a way to kick the can down the road and mitigate community outrage.
You are taking the feature away to save money on developing it for the new app. That’s it. Speak to your community like they’re adults.
This is an incredibly deaf and short sighted decision.
And because we’ve seen your love and tremendous response to this feature
So you have analytics and feedback saying this is a ‘loved’ and ‘tremendous’ feature…… yet you deprecate it…. And follow up with “well maybe we’ll include it in a future update”
This “new experience” is starting to sound like minimalist garbage. Spent two years building from the ground up, but lack feature parity to the existing versions. No watch together, no movie posters, no offline viewing, no device casting…. But hey! You spent two years on it!
Just saw the email about this now. Ridiculous decision that they have the gall to frame as some sort of benefit.
I have had a lifetime Pass for years but they are moving steadily away from the reason why I and I think many others paid for it - and it’s not the increasingly annoying bloat, or the privacy issues, or decisions like this.
Time to start looking at the alternatives I think.
I’ve yet to see a solution to block apps from updating all devices. Plus your friends that you watch with would also have to avoid updating (unless it’s a server update, which I doubt)
Yeah this is an insane decision, if your new framework means you can develop so much faster then delay the rework by a month and add Watch Together
I use this feature weekly
Definitely use the link in my starting post to ask for a refund then.
Even though this feature didn’t require Plex pass, if you paid for Plex pass to support the company, ask for a refund and explain why. If enough people bombard them, I’m sure their Dev team will hear about it: https://www.plex.tv/contact/
Insane decision wrapped in disingenuous corpospeak. The enshittification has really begun.
Absolutely terrible decision to end watch together. This is the only reason I use Plex to watch with my kids whom live far away. If they don’t reverse this decision I’m looking for an alternative and never coming back.
This sucks, this is a feature i use multiple times a week with friends and is a major part of my plex usage. Hope they can find a way to keep this going or be hostable on my plex server to avoid any cost to plex (if the hosting price is the reason they are canning it).
This is a feature that should be included in all versions, hard stop.
I am beyond incensed by this decision. I struggled to find words to politely express my opinion on this change so I am left with a simple:
“This is a bad choice, and if the retooled code cannot support this functionality, then it is not ready to go, period.”
This is my most used feature for maintaining friendships and family relationships across the globe, I use it pretty much daily. I would be willing to pay a fee to maintain access, it’s that vital to my life. But what the hell, honestly? The only thing this will succeed in is pushing people to less legal routes or other apps. The web app is NOT functional and frequently transcodes, my system cannot handle multiple transcoding streams and having to reformat all of my media to address it would likely be in vain anyway because it sounds like it’s going to be axed eventually as well. Unreal betrayal of your users…
