Watched movies turn Unwatched

First of all, my apologies if this has already been asked before. I’m having difficulties knowing exactly what to search for.

On a user level if you have marked a certain amount of content as “Watched”, and the server crashes (or in my case because of a power outage - needing to map the drives anew) then all the content that was previously set as Watched becomes Unwatched. If there is a lot of content, then it takes a long time to manually set them again, let alone remember what you have watched.

Is there like a plugin or some other way, that enables Plex to track my users “Watched/Unwatched” content, and then revert it to its original form, in case I have to switch server or other?

Hope you understand the question and if not please don’t hesitate to ask.

Thank you a lot for your time.

Kind regards,

David

Are you using proper filenaming and folder organization, so Plex does find and download appropriate metadata for your media?

Or are you using the simple approach by creating a ‘Other videos’ library?
If the latter, Plex has no way to recognize your files if the drive letter or folder name has changed. Then all those unmatched media files will be treated as if Plex has never seen them before.

Did you move the Plex data folder to an external hard drive? Or maybe even to a network file share?

Hey OttoKerner and thank you for responding.

I’m using the correct Plex libraries… Movies for movies and TV-shows with only tv-show content.

I generally name my files something like “Moviename (2015)” (without the " of course).

Plex generally has no trouble finding the correct metadata.

The problem happened when I had a power outage at home. What most likely happened was that after rebooting the server, I had to point Plex to the right folders again, whereas it started reloading all the metadata for all the content.

Unfortunately that meant that my user, when he opened plex from his side, noticed that all the content that he had marked as Watched, was reset.

Was hoping there was somewhere that Plex or a Plugin for Plex (just like Tautulli who stores or keeps tabs on what my users prefer to see or have seen) that could save my user’s settings or something, so in case I had to copy all the content to another drive, and reload all the metadata, that it would remember what my user had set as watched or not.

In this case, I think what happened was,
that the main Plex database file became corrupted, due to the power outage. And that is the place where all the played/unplayed information is stored.

You can try and restore a database backup from a few days before the crash:

Well when you put it that way, it makes perfect sense

Its a while back by now so I’m not sure it’s necessary any longer, but it’s nice to know there’s a viable option in future events, because it will probably happen again at some point.

I’ll be sure to try it out next time.

Thanks a LOT, have a great weekend and merry christmas
