WD My Cloud PR4100 Help From Smart Users

I really want to save money. I have the EX4 with 20TB Red Drives on it fairly new. Evey new NAS server I tried to get will cost me $2000+ with a 32TB. I wish I could get a sever with large capacity to copy from EX4 to New Nas Sever then power down my EX4 to protect it as a backup in case the new one fail. But too much money to spend just to get DVR feature.

Here’s the real question

What if I get a diskless WD My Cloud PR4100 then shutdown my EX4 then remove the drives and carefully place them on the PR4100 in the same slots they were on the EX4. Will I loose my data? Will Plex see my media server info there including names of library and all and the the new Plex Server app will simply be an update?

In the future I’ll buy hard drive and use the EX4 as backup then shut it down to protect my backups.

Thanks for any expert help =D>

Something tells me that if you try that, you have a good chance at losing your data. I would imagine the volume / share configurations are stored on the NVRAM of the EX4, however this might be testable.

If you have enough free space left out of your 20TB, you could remove one or two disks (preferably) from the volume and create a new volume with just some test files in it - you could then move those over to see if the data persists. All of that being said, it doesn’t seem to be a very smart way to go as the risks may outweigh the reward there.

What about Amazon drive or something? You could (encrypt if you’re worried) upload your stuff there - move the disks, and then pull it back down and have technically used them as a backup for you.

I’ll go with your advise. You’re right. I forgot about share configurations and I’m sure they are encrypted. I’ll just have to get new hard drive to back things up or see if using Amazon drive might be cheaper. At the end, I want my backup to be stored offline, shutdown, and only turn the old server back on when I need to backup more file from the new server. Thanks
