I currently have a WD PR4100 NAS with four 4 TB drives (16 TB total space) with a Raid 10, giving me 8 TB of usable space. It is now 95% full and I needed to upgrade.
With the lowest prices I have every seen (at Best Buy), I just purchased four 10 TB drives (40 TB total) and a brand new empty WD PR4100. Which after setting up the Raid will give me an additional 20 TB of usable space.
Both PR4100s will have the latest WD OS 5 version and the latest version of Plex Server as of Oct 2022.
So now I will have my original PR4100 with a Raid 10 (which is nearly full) and new blank PR4100.
I have everything setup perfectly on my current PR4100, including a VERY customized and configured Plex server. I have over 3,000 movies, who knows how many TV episodes, complete audio libraries from Paul Harvey which all had to be customized, etc…
I need to move my Plex Server from my current PR4100 to my new PR4100 while preserving all of my personalized collections, customized metadata, artwork, server settings, etc…
I know there is a general guide Move an Install to Another System here, but what I do not know is any extra steps needed for specifically a PR4100 setup. For example it is not just a matter of copy over the server folders like in a Window system… it takes a lot more to get that from a PR4100.
Is there a guide someone has posted on this? Anyone have any experience that they have learned from?
Okay… Instead of moving the Plex server from my current WD My Cloud PR4100 to my new WD My Cloud PR4100, couldn’t I just keep the Plex Server as is on my current PR4100 and then move all the movies and TV series to my new PR4100 and then point my Plex server to the network location on my new PR4100? (See Screenshot below)
Will the Plex server recognize the same movies and TV series with all my current customized collections, artwork, metatags? If not, is there a way to move only the media (not the server location) and still keep all of this intact?
I’m currently in exactly the same situation, I have a PR4100 with 12TB usable space (RAID5) which I have maxed out and am upgrading to 42TB (RAID5).
I have followed the instructions in the link and it has gone fairly smoothly (hint: to copy your custom metadata install WinSCP, access your PR4100 using SSH and copy everything from
/mnt/HD/HD_a2/plex_conf/Plex Media Server/).
I have however hit a snap, on my destination PR4100 I can’t see a folder for plex_conf, despite having installed Plex. I don’t if anything knows any steps I can follow on Plex to force it to create the Plex directory so I can transfer my Plex custom Metadata?
copied my Movies and TV Libraries over to my PR4100
I just SSH’ed in and currently backing up my “Plex Media Server” to save my highly customized metadata / collections / artwork / etc… For those who need to know how to do this here is GREAT step by step video that will have you backing up your Plex server in 5 min Viable Cloud Backup Solutions for Plex in 2021 (and 2022) - #32 by Hobbes_Is_Real
After that is done, then I am going to fire up Plex again, add the new PR4100 library to Movies and TV, update the libraries, and the remove the old location from my old PR4100. And with fingers crossed, all works and my no one can tell difference… except now I will have 20 TB to add new stuff!!!
Done. At first I was worried because it could not see the new content from the new PR4100. But after signing out and signing in several times and then rescanning each time… it finally saw the content.
I have now removed the libraries to the old server and turned it off. All is working… except for a few one offs movies or TV series that I may have to reupload.
