We should start a plex boycott

what is wrong with this company? first we get a “lifetime pass” then they introduce “remote pass” now you are going to charge my friends and family to view my content? The VCs must really be breathing down yall throats to make some money huh?

Everyone should boycott this damn company and enshitification processes and switch to Jellyfin. Keep squeezing that juice and see how far its gonna get you.

Huh… you make it sound like that change somehow invalidated an existing Plex Pass and Plex is charging you for that again. I hope you know that’s not the case…

If you have a Plex Pass…

  • You can stream remotely from your own and shared libraries
  • Friends can stream remotely from your libraries (no additional watch pass needed)

If you don’t have a Plex Pass

  • You can stream from shared remote libraries, if the server owner has a Plex Pass
  • You’ll need a remote watch pass if you want to stream from your own or shared remote servers if their owner doesn’t have a Plex Pass.

Just wondering…
If you feel Plex owes you free software and services… I’m somewhat skeptical this is going to happen.

This is no longer the case starting with Roku and going to other TV Apps in 2026: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1605909-plex-removing-remote-access-and-replacing-with-a-subscription/

users outside local network will need to purchase a remote pass.

Only if the server owner doesn’t have a Plex pass

Here’s the original blog post
https://www.plex.tv/blog/important-2025-plex-updates/

See “Upcoming Change to Remote Playback for Personal Media”, specifically:

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR CURRENT PLEX PASS HOLDERS:
For users who have an active Plex Pass subscription, remote playback will continue to be available to you without interruption from any Plex Media Server, after these changes go into effect. When running your own Plex Media Server as a subscriber, other users to whom you have granted access can also stream from the server (whether local or remote), without ANY additional charge—not even a mobile activation fee. More on that later in this update.

… and here’s the related support article:

You don’t have to love Plex for that change, but you should get your facts straight.

Doesn’t help that there was also a blog post out there dated today (not on the Plex forums) indicating that you needed a Remote Watch pass even if the server owner had a PP. Looks like it’s been corrected though.

This is what I saw, and lead to my angry post. I retract it
