Does remote playback on my own network require a pass?

Apologies for a really dumb question, but appreciate the help. I saw the blog post about the coming increases and saw remote playback will no longer be free. My system for years has been a server running Plex (actually XBMC then Kodi before that), and then I playback on TVs using Plex app within Roku devices on my local network. only I have never set it up to play from off my network.

Is this functionality going away in the free pass? I realize I sound like I am answering my own question, but it seems local only isn’t quite “remote”.

No, this change only affects playback from devices outside of your local network. If you only stream from devices on your own local network, nothing changes for you.

However, if you decide at some point that you’d like to, for example, stream from your phone while outside your home (off your local network), then you will need a Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass.

Something to keep in mind though, if you share your server with folks outside your local network, they will be affected. For example, if you share with a friend who lives in another house, that would be a remote stream and therefore either you or they would need a Plex Pass (or they a Remote Watch Pass).

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks, that makes sense and I really appreciate the clarification.

You’re welcome!

Just to clarify. As long as I have a plex pass (currently lifetime) my friends will be unaffected by these changes?

That is correct. But a bit off-topic.

Anyone who views content from your server using the upcoming “new” apps will be able to view this content remotely, because you have a Plex Pass. Whether these users are managed users of you, in your Home, or a separate account invited, everyone is covered by you having a Pass.

Thank you for the clarification, albeit off-topic. I appreciate it.

Hi!

Just to clarify this. I have a network that´s set up in multiple segments/vlan´s. My kid in a 192.168.10.* network, my plex server in the 192.168.1.* network. The Plex dashboard shows his traffic as remote, but it really isn´t. Will the licensing model have all 192.168.* and 10.* ip´s as local traffic so that one does not need a license for those ip ranges?

You should be able to configure Settings → [Select Server Name] → Networks → LAN Networks such that all of your local networks show as local traffic. For example, in your scenario, you would configure it as:
192.168.1.0/24,192.168.10.0/24

Note that there are no spaces (having spaces will break the parsing).

If you configure this correctly, your child’s traffic should show as local. I would expect this to obviate the need for any additional licensing.

Also, I just noticed you already have a Plex Pass. So you’re covered anyway.
