This is EXTREMELY ANNOYING but for the past months, whenever I login with a web browser to my Plex server, Plex decides I need to go through the SET UP yet again, picking a default server, and picking what library sources I want on the left-hand. WHY is it COMPLETELY FORGETTING things? Be aware that I do NOT retain session cookies across browser restarts. But that is NOT a good excuse for the web app to NOT store my preferences ON MY SERVER or at least with my user ID in Plex’s cloud.
All clients store server configs like this locally, on a client basis. Preventing the client from maintaining settings by deleting session cookies will - as you noticed - force the client to think it is a new install every time.
It sucks, but makes sense from a technical point of view. You can use the clients without access to a plex server (purely for their free ad-supported “Movies and Shows” on Plex). You can use clients without owning a server yourself (friend invite). You can run Plex with a server, but also be a member of other servers.
In 2 of the 3 above scenarios, there is no “owned” server to store client settings, so it must use local settings. If it uses local settings, there isn’t much of a point in having settings stored remotely in one case, but not in all other cases.
If you prefer to have browser settings deleted each session, perhaps consider using an alternate browser that retains the settings purely to run Plex in? I use FF for all browsing, with Chrome for Plex. Or, consider installing the local Plex player app, and use that for viewing? (non-web-players will support more video codecs, so your server will transcode videos less often)
EDIT: An ID in the Plex (company) cloud isn’t too bad a thought though. It’s certainly an option I think can work, but might anger a lot of people that would hate to lose local control over their client view-settings.
In the past it remembered settings and shared them across all my web sessions. How do I reenable that behavior. Once I picked my profile and entered my profile’s PIN, things were hunky dory. But some recent (past 3-8 months) server update removed that behavior.
Oh. That’s, uh… I’m not sure how it works (based on what I thought I knew about web settings), but you might be looking for this option?
SETTINGS SYNC is ON (my screen looks just like that screenshot, offering the opportunity for me to turn int OFF)
Current videos/TV/movies played IS remembered properly across different web browser sessions. It’ just the left-hand source column that gets screwed up.
How are you opening the web app? Do you use a bookmark in the browser or on your desktop?
Do you let the browser history auto-complete the URL you are typing in?
If so, what is the complete URL you are using?
