Web player timeout?

Server Version#: 1.22.0.4163
Player Version#: (web player, same)

This started happening recently, days maybe a week or so ago - I have something playing on my laptop and pause it “for a while” (say more than 10 minutes but not sure the exact time). It used to be I could just play and it would play just fine or at worse I’d skip to the next episode (when watching a TV show) and then right back to the one I was watching and it would resume right from that spot. Now I get an error and when I click “retry” I get the player again but it just spins forever and never starts or resumes as session.

It feels like there is a new/changed timeout value that’s causing this - the only way around it is for me to fully refresh the browser and sorta start over, that works but takes far longer (since I have a multiuser household I have to select my user, etc).

Any way to change this back or am I missing something? (Oh, and sorry if this is the wrong forum, I figure this is a server setting that’s why I’m here)

Thanks!

Did you possibly turn on this setting?

Set it to 0 if you don’t want it enabled.

Nope, that is still set to 0, should have said that in my first post. Thanks for trying to help, any other ideas?

Could it be your laptop’s power saving feature turning off the WiFi?

Sure, I could see that being the problem - but again something changed recently and I don’t think it was my laptop as in the past I could put it to sleep while playing something then when I came out of sleep I’d need to skip to the next episode, then right back so it would pick up where I last left off. This used to work great but as of a few weeks or so ago it does not, which is why I’m thinking something has changed server-side.

So I guess the question is this - is there any way to get it to resume a session once that session disconnects without needed to fully refresh the client? If something changed to make this different that’s possibly understandable, just curious what, where and why.

I don’t know of anything specific that has changed.

PMS keeps track of sessions and when a session timesout, it should not be possible to move on to the next item. I mean resuming the current item or playing the next item shouldn’t matter if the session is closed, neither should work. I wonder if you were taking advantage of a bug that has since been fixed.

I suppose that’s possible, that would be a shame as I’ve used Plex since almost it’s very original release MANY years ago and have always done this. My assumption was that when I skipped to the next video that initiated a new session to start playing that video and then once the session was restarted I could move back to the one I was watching previously.

While I can live with it if there is any way to “fix” it I’d love to find it as it’s rather frustrating given how much I use Plex (41TB of media, 4k 1080p films, 500 4K films, 30,000 TV episodes, 125,000 MP3s). I basically watch Plex and Youtube and that’s it these days.`

Thanks much for the back and forth, I do hope this can be worked out.

There are 2 session information. 1 for the individual item being played and 1 for the queue. If the queue session is closed, then it doesn’t know what the next item would be, so it fails.

Can you provide more information here as that doesn’t really feel correct - and what I mean is when I click next it absolutely skips to the next video with the proper title, etc. - I’m assuming (and hate doing so) that it isn’t the client that knows that’s coming next (otherwise it’s queue would be huge if I play the first episode of a 11 year long show). I can understand how the session would need to be reconnected somehow but as I’ve said a few times something here as changed as this used it work just fine a few weeks back.

Are there any technical details you can provide here that I can look into further? Thanks again for your thoughts.

What to update as I realized something else today - this behavior doesn’t just happen if my machine goes to sleep, it happens if I keep something paused for say 4+ hours (not sure 4 hours is where it breaks, just know that a LONG pause will break it).

Not sure if that helps.

I’ve also been noticing an issue where playback actually stops working entirely until I reload the page if its been idle for too long, it seems to also correct itself by navigating through settings a bunch and going back and trying again.

This has only started happening in the last ~1-2 weeks.

DING DING DING - this is EXACTLY what I’m seeing and it’s definitely a change on my end too as you’re right this happens when I’m just idle for “a while” - do you have any sense for how long it takes to go idle and break?

Nothing concrete, I did notice that there is an error that seems present in the console when trying to play items which will continue to pop up any time until you reload (or navigate around a bunch). I didnt capture what it is though
