Ever since yesterday the subtitles are no longer displayed.

Since then in Plex Media Server.log I see this error for every playback:

If I select subtitle burnin then I get a similar error in the logs, and a playback error on the client.

Tried with a different user and reset the client to default to no avail.
First I had used with an older PMS version (1.41.7), but had the same error.

Anyone else having this issue with subtitles?
Any idea on what I could try to fix it?

I see that we got a new WebOS client update yesterday, could it be related?

I’m not seeing these errors and subtitles are appearing properly for me, but some more information would be useful to investigate further.

Could you enable logging from the webOS app to your PMS server and share the relevant logs from PMS with me please?

Having the exact same problem, either subtitles aren’t showing or playback isn’t starting at all. In addition to the HTTP errors from the OP, I also see these in the logs anytime I try to play something with subtitles.

These don’t help. It doesn’t say what caused the error. You need to turn on DEBUG logging and provide the log from before these errors show.

Enabled logging, went to the home page, tried to watch a video that has subtitles which used to work, and then disabled logging again after it failed to play.

I’m on WebOS with a similar problem: Plex for WebOS cannot play burned-in subtitles - #11 by efalsken

I can play the videos without subtitles and I can play them if I change Subtitle Burn-In to “Never”. But if I leave it on “always” or “Automatic” and play some PGS or ASS subtitles, then I get the Playback Error immediately when starting any video.

Can also confirm the same problem. I can only Direct Play videos that have subtitles, if I disable “force direct play” I get a playback error. Turning off subtitles fixes this and enables me to transcode properly.

Just factory reset my LG TV and reinstalled Plex, the problem persists (whenever the Server decides to Burn subtitles i get a playback error).

Finally got around to capturing some Debug logs (with the Plex WebOS player configured to send logs to the server as well). Here they are:

Same problem here, it’s related to plexmediaserver upgrade in my case. Rollback to previous version has resolved the problem.

I have the same problem with ASS subtitles. Trying to load the file throws the unknown error (code 4 from verbose debugging, taken from console overlay), but if i disable subtitles it plays it without a problem.

This is only on my LG C2. Android phone, web app, desktop app, nvidia sheild don’t have this problem.
