Seeing increased use of the WebP format, and would like to see native support for this in Plex.
More information on WebP can be found here and here.
Thank you!
Would like to see webp image format support added to Plex. The significantly smaller file sizes than JPG and PNG could even improve performance of Plex.
Do you store media as webp today? I’m curious about your use case. I’ve never seen anybody use it except as a web delivery optimization layer.
Now that support has arrived to Apple devices I have, yes.
Mod-Edit:
merged those 2 threads to avoid further duplication of requests
Plex already supports WebP but it is missing in the Local Media Assets as an allowed extension. https://support.plex.tv/articles/200220677-local-media-assets-movies/
Would be great. I save all my posters, cover in webp for many reasons. All my devices support webp and i already save them manually as webp. You can already upload webp images as cover etc just the missing option to fetch from Local Media Assets agent is missing.
EDIT: Workaround is to just simply rename .webp to .jpg. It works but could have negative effects how plex could handle this image.
agree but not just for image also vids, I have a ton in my misc clips that are webp videos and none will play on plex even though they work fine in any browser or vlc.
