Server Version#: 1.14.0.5470

So I’ve been experiencing some issues that I noticed only through my Tautulli notifications. I’m running Tautulli v2.1.25, and I have alerts set up to notify me via Slack if my server goes down (meaning: Tautulli can’t communicate with the server, the implication being that the server has crashed), and when it comes back up (Tautulli has re-established communication with the server). Early this week, I was actually running PMS v1.14.0.5468, when I noticed that Tautulli was sending me 2 distinct alerts every minute, specifically telling me that the server was “down”, then immediately back “up”. I upgraded to v1.14.0.5470, but experienced the same behavior.
After troubleshooting with the developer of Tautulli, he looked at the websocket logs and saw that PMS was sending bad or corrupt data with the webhooks, thereby inhibiting Tautulli’s ability to connect with the server. Here’s a quick sample from the log:
2018-11-30 02:18:50 - ERROR :: Thread-813 : bK-
2018-11-30 02:20:53 - ERROR :: Thread-815 : ranscodeSession":[{“key”:"/transcode/sessions/52492512-fad3-4

These are a few errors copied directly from the log. Does anyone know how this can happen, or how it can be resolved? I tried a “repair” function, but that didn’t fix the issue. What is this a symptom of, just a glitch? Or something more serious?
Besides this problem, I’m not experiencing any other issues with my server. I’ve momentarily turned off Tautulli notifications relating to the server being down, and everything’s working fine. This might seem kind of trivial, but I’d much rather have the software working properly. Any help would be appreciated.
Yes, pardon my slip. It’s been a long week for me.
Also, as further context, see this post on the Plex as a Service thread about the problems I experienced when using PaaS. My usage of that app coincided with the start of the issues described above, but I don’t believe PaaS is the cause , as the websocket problems started hours before I began using PaaS.
Does anyone have any more insight as to why my PMS websocket might be sending out bad data? I can provide full logs if necessary.
Does anyone know if the new 1.14.1.5487 update fixes this websocket issue? Or am I literally the only person experiencing these errors?
So I’ve been running PMS version 1.14.1.5488 for about a week now, and I’m still getting gibberish in the websocket log. I’m starting to get more concerned about this because it’s persisting across version updates. Here’s a recent snippet from the log:

Again, this is just copied straight from the log file. There is something definitely wrong here, and I have no idea what it is.
I’ve been a long-time Plex user/evangelist, and I would really appreciate someone responding to this thread, if only to acknowledge its existence; a diagnosis would be preferable, of course.

That is a really odd issue…I can’t say I’ve heard of anyone else running into this. A few ideas:
You can try watching the event source notifications via e.g. curl like so (fill in token, address). That should be the same data, but human readable, and it would be interesting to hear if that’s corrupt as well.
$ curl me:32400/:/eventsource/notifications
You’re on Windows. I’ve seen a ton of issues over the years which looked crazy, but boiled down to either (a) malware or (b) some weird DLL/network hook.
Thanks for the reply, Elan. I’m unfamiliar with curl, so please forgive my ignorance. I’m trying this command, based on your suggestion:
curl 127.0.0.1:32400/MYPLEXTOKEN/eventsource/notifications
and this is my result:
<html><head><title>Unauthorized</title></head><body><h1>401 Unauthorized</h1></body></html>
I feel I might be doing something wrong here.
In regards to your early conclusions about using Windows, how would I address the “weird DLL/network hook” item? I honestly don’t even know what that means.

Sorry, I was incomplete with my description; you’d need to figure out your Plex token and then use it like so:
curl 127.0.0.1:32400:32400/:/eventsource/notifications?X-Plex-Token=<token>
Thanks to @sa2000 who mentioned ListDLLs - Sysinternals | Microsoft Learn which you can use (ListDLLs.exe, specifically) to see if there’s anything untoward hijacking the PMS process.
Okay, I tried two variations of the command (with the extra :32400 removed):
curl 127.0.0.1:32400/:/eventsource/notifications?X-Plex-Token=###
and
curl 127.0.0.1:32400/:/eventsource/notifications?X-Plex-Token=<###>
where “###” is my Plex token. The first attempt gave me the same “Unauthorized” result, whereas the second resulted in an “incorrect syntax” message. I’ll look into that Microsoft resource later tonight…

The first syntax is correct, but it must be the wrong token.

All right, found the correct token. I now have two text logfiles: the websocket log provided through Tautulli, and the one generated through curl. Can I share those here? Is there identifying information in either of those logs? I can tell you that the curl log is all plainly readable, with no gibberish characters.

Interesting data point for sure Can you get the list of DLLs so we can see if something is mangling the WebSocket data?
Of course. Here’s the list of DLLs related to “plex”:

Updating in the hopes of a resolution:
My Plex server is still sending garbage data (at least according to Tautulli websocket logs), and I’ve run into a situation where it’s a real problem.
Recently, I set up an iPad at work for the purposes of using as a front-desk display. I set up a playlist of 15 short videos, then synced the playlist to the device. I put the app in to “Offline” browsing mode, but quickly noticed that despite that toggle setting, the device was still communicating to the server in real time.
This is strange to me, considering my understanding of the definition of “offline”; dismayed by the constant stream of notifications from Tautulli, I then added some conditions to the notification agent. I added conditions for library names, device names, and my work IP address, but since Tautulli is getting garbage data from PMS, those conditions don’t always get met. The result is continued notifications from my “offline” device, with intermittent frequency.
Do I have any hope of fixing this problem? Or am I officially screwed? Even if I back up my database, remove then re-install PMS, will this issue persist? As I’ve mentioned before, updating PMS has no effect on this garbage data. Additionally, how can I be sure that this garbage data is relegated only to websocket data? What if there’s corruption somewhere else — is that something I can even check?
I would appreciate some action on this; I know @elan himself took the time to look in on this thread, but his last response was almost a month ago. I also know I’m just one user, and these forums are now infested with “Oh, Plex sucks now, I’m using Emby” users and that I’m not a huge priority, but my issue is something I’d consider a serious problem. Please help.

You can try uninstalling the media server and reinstalling it (without removing application data). That would help in the case that somehow the install became corrupted.
Nothing in the database should be able to cause that sort of corruption.
It’s near-impossible to tell.
I apologize for going dark on you, but we’ve never seen this issue before, and couldn’t reproduce it, so we have to assume it’s something unique to your setup.
Additionally, do you have any notion that any app is getting corrupt data besides Tautulli? It’s possible there’s a bug on their side as well.
In cases like this, it’s best to eliminate possibilities as much as possible. If you take Tautulli out of the equation and things run perfectly, it’s likely an issue with that app. If you know that other apps are receiving bad data, then it’s something with the server and I would try a re-install first.
But … plenty of people are using PMS + Tautulli w/o issues, so … I’m left wondering what the difference is here.
Thanks. I’ll try that.

I understand; this is kind of a weird issue, and the fact that I appear to be the only one experiencing it means that it’s low priority for Plex devs, and that’s completely reasonable.

I don’t really use any other apps besides Tautulli. PMS runs perfectly fine by itself - it serves my content locally and remotely with no issues, and my shared users have reported no problems on their end; this is just localized to Tautulli performance. I only came to the conclusion that it was a PMS issue after speaking with @SwiftPanda16 , referenced in my OP:
tycho1974:
After troubleshooting with the developer of Tautulli, he looked at the websocket logs and saw that PMS was sending bad or corrupt data with the webhooks, thereby inhibiting Tautulli’s ability to connect with the server.
Is there another app I can use to test the websockets data? I could install something else that has logging capabilities and take a look at those records, comparing them with the same timeframe from Tautulli…
And if I haven’t said it already, thanks to @elan for taking the time to address this at all. I appreciate it.

If you’re running our web client, it uses WebSockets, and you should be able to see the log messages inside it. Do they look OK?
I actually typically connect directly to the server through its LAN IP; when I’m working remotely, I connect through my dynamic DNS. I therefore don’t ever use the “live” web client on plex.tv; the web client on my version of PMS doesn’t have the updated version.
So I tried doing just that — I connected to my server using plex.tv, looking at the webhooks section. Unfortunately, I don’t see any available logs:
When I download the standard log package, I don’t see any files related to webhooks, unless I should be looking in the generic PMS log. Webhooks are not at all in my wheelhouse, so it’s likely I’m missing something…
