Weird how plex, inc keeps on gaslighting us paying users and not apologizing for lying to our faces.

Well, I do like Plex being operational, but I do hope that they’ll get hit with so many lawsuits and government penalties that they will start putting privacy and users first and that any VC firms making money through selling private information won’t touch them ever again for investments.
Revenue should come from your products and the ability to better the lives of the users, not by selling the users.
This was either a completely and fully planned assault on privacy and user’s rights to make a buck, or a complete case of total incompetence. Neither is good and needs to be changed.
They still have not removed any old shared library users which have never been assigned friends from the friends section. Or pointed users there to review the friends after a login. That just shows a complete disregard for their users.
Please, somebody hit them hard enough that they’ll start understanding right from wrong.

And the enshittification continues.

there’s a button where you can opt out. ^^^ Right There ^^

Also, this is about advertising that comes with the ad-supported content, tailored to you based on other titles you watch on the ad-supported content sections. You can always just completely disable said content in the account settings, and this consent form wouldn’t even be relevant then.

Tell us you don’t know what that means without telling us you don’t know what that means. This is how it’s supposed to be done. I do not agree, done.

Guys, it’s not the point that things can be “turned off” or “opted out”.

The point is: Plex is self hosted. So to me, this should not exist to begin with. There should be no reason to ask me this…

And my “enshittification” remark is also about that line “…it is not possible to opt out of advertising…” All in all, to me, this all screams “we are slowly making it all worse”

Plex is not a social media platform. Keep it clean and functional please?

This is a bit of a mischaracterization. It’s factual that you can’t opt out of advertising on all of Plex’s on demand services, but they have always been clear about that mission from the moment they got their investment from their partners that led to the outcry over implementation. I don’t think there’s anything nefarious about it. Opt out of all that stuff and you got nothing to worry about.

Problem is, Plex can’t make any money just being a clean and functional server for your personal media. I have a plex pass. I paid less thatn $100 for it years ago. They haven’t made any money from me since then and I’m pretty sure they spent that money already. If you want plex to stick around, you should support their efforts to be profitable.

Exactly this! If someone wants a “clean”, non-ad supported media streaming server/client, there are alternatives out there that are free (or have different pricing models). Note that most of them don’t support nearly the number of clients that Plex does. Also many of them aren’t as robust or as easy to install, manage, etc.

Plex started as a clean personal media server sharing thing. It was simple and effective.
Plex CHOSE to become what they are now and then turn around and say it’s logical that they need more money for it. That it’s logical that a one time lifetime membership fee cannot be enough. That’s gaslighting. Because that is definitely what you sold.

They sold me a lifetime pass based on the features of that moment. Based on what Plex was at that moment.

They are now changing that deal. And I, and many others, do not like that. And I think that’s fair.

At the very least: do not force these changes. Make it opt-in etc, etc. Treat those early ambassador’s of your software with a bit more respect.

But most important of all: Keep the self hosters safe and anonymous.

Does it not do what it did when you bought your plex pass? Can you not opt out of whatever the hell has your undies in a bunch?

Yo I hate the fact that Plex decided to email my friends what weird ass anime I’m watching on my day off, but what are you talking about exactly? Who’s going to jail for watching something on Plex? I don’t get this comment for real.
