Can you please change your way of authenticating users, for it to be locally, instead of externally on your side, or at least give the option to the user to change it, if they want to.
It is affecting in my experience as customer, as I was not able today to access my content, and it seems that such simple thing that should have been implemented from the beginning is still not done, and probably not even in your roadmap.
Just in advance, I am not going to accept any excuses, in relation to the cause of the issue, as if you were DDOSed, 1 of your servers got on fire or whatever. To be honest it is out of my interest, and the conclusion is the same = customer being affected.
I have already been using your service some years, and happy with it, but those happy days seems to be ending, and if something do not change, unfortunately, I will need to start searching for other alternatives and leave the Plex family.
Hope you can understand my point of view, and take this feedback into account for next releases.
I have a similar concern about this. I have several devices on my network that connect to my server including a couple of desktops, Smart TV and various phones and tablets. During the outage yesterday it was very difficult to access my server even though i have tweaked all of the settings that i can find to allow local network connections. Even connecting to the Plex server using the local host web interface only worked intermittently.
I appreciate that the world has gone “Cloud” crazy these days but having to connect to a central server on the internet just to be pinged back to my own network is a little bonkers. The central login should only be required for connecting to your own server from out side your network, but even that can be avoided by using a VPN. I have purchased a Plex pass and therefore feel like i should be able to use the software fully on my own network without an internet connection if needed.
Apologies for the long winded post but i would appreciate some help with this if i missed something.
Yup, i even sent a tweet about it to them. Zero response. Accessing the local administration area should NOT require an external login service/server to be up-and-running. It should be a FALLBACK in case the local method fails.
One should always be able to reach the local backend interface. Regardless of the fact if plex.tv is up or not.
Plex can be accessed without authentication when the network/IP address of the device is listed in the advanced setting “List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth”.
This does not work completely. All smart apps can connect but only as the last local user you cannot switch local users. And if you have a local user that is restricted to kids content for instance and you can’t switch to it then it becomes unusable…
This is a major issue that breaks the original purpose a lot of people Setup PLEX to begin with. and requiring internet to authenticate local users and to switch accounts is not only retarded it is a defect in your product.
The purpose of a media server is to serve my media. I don’t want you free movies and tv crap i can get that from Crackle or a dozen other services. I want my media served to me. I paid a lot of money for a lifetime product license so i expect it to serve my needs. I know this sounds selfish but I know I am not the only one out there who is pissed off about this and when will someone from PLEX respond to this issue and say once and for all they will fix it. Because it is a defect this was a major feature that I paid for and now they broke it. and wont bother acknowledging the fact that they don’t even care. I didn’t pay for another Netflix i paid for a media server that i could manage and have my media on. so stop holding my media hostage.
Totally agree with you, however, Plex team just seems to ignore all community messages, and continue with the bad service they are nowadays offering, even to plex pass users…
Really considering myself of changing of mediaserver, and stop recommeding plex to my friends…
Although its very rare, i lost my internet connection briefly this morning and could not access the server interface or any content whilst using my TV app.
@clj3100. I have local IP addresses authorised but this does not allow access to the server settings and does not work 100% when accessing content either.
The image below shows the attempt to access the server interface whilst on the server machine and with no internet access.
