What are some ways people are organizing and naming their home video clips?

I have ~15 years of video clips organized by year (top folder in the tree), with certain trips, holidays, etc. having their own folders and miscellaneous files under “Miscellaneous” or by person (for example, “Jack” for my son)…see below:

2017
–>Christmas
–>Opening Presents 1.mp4
–>Opening Presents 2.mp4
–>Putting Up Tree.mp4

–>Jack
–>Playing Football.mp4
–>Playing At Park.mp4

–>Miscellaneous
–>Alex Singing Karaoke.mp4

What are some of the better ways people found to get these to be available in Plex? I did “Other Videos”, but that just puts them ALL in one big pile (that can be sorted by name or date, which is nice, but some videos I have will be from a camcorder and converted from miniDV to MKV files, so that “date” gets messed up) and it looks like “TV Shows” using Personal Media can basically just do by “subject” and not by year (like my folder structure. Was just hoping to get some tips from people to get started and maybe incorporate those ideas into my collection.

I’m just starting to look at doing this again, and I think I’m going to add them to a Photos library so I can view them by timeline, and then add certain videos to Albums based on the event.

Photos library? That’s interesting. I just tried it and there is a sorting option in there that will sort them by “folders”. Thanks, this is certainly an option I’m going to look into.

Hi guys!

The keys are:
main-folders
sub-folders
time-stamp

example 1:
2017-12-24 Christmas
… next folder…

example 2:
create an main-folder: vacation
create sub-folders: United States
create foto-folder: 2017-07-19 United States
…

That should work for pictures and Videos

BTW:
Within folders you can rename single files, too

Just retried and it is not working as in the past. After synch of database structure was gone

Does anyone know if when videos are under the “Photos” section, are they transcoded that same as typical movies or TV shows? Just curious.

I’m interested in this topic too. I initially loaded family videos as Personal Movies but it was quite cumbersome. I have a lot of the videos and we typically are interested in seeing one from a particular year. As movies this was hard to do (for me anyway). I had a number of them organized into folders by year (“season”) but folder view always errored out so that was no help. Today I decided to re-do it as TV Shows with Family Video at the top and Season folders underneath. The Folder view worked this time but the only ‘name’ shown was the episode number. So the end result wasn’t really much better (as Movies the file name which is the title was shown).

I’m spending some time cleaning up the meta data in my Family Video files - some of the older ones lacked the fields I ultimately standardized on. I wish there was a simple way to tell Plex to use my metadata to display these. Still exploring some options I have seen for an user-created agent.
