What can't PLEX ATV4K app play a 4K HDR 60fps movie?

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3766
Player Version#: 7.11

I am curious why PLEX can’t play a 4K HDR 60fps movie? In this case Gemini Man.

Infuse on the ATV seems to have no issues. It also seems to play fine on all my other PLEX devices. Just not the ATV4K. Any ideas why it seems to skip a long at 1 fps?

Apple TV 4K doesn’t support Dolby Vision Profile 7.

During playback, what do you see in the Server Dashboard? Is Plex attempting to transcode or tone-map this file?

I believe that Infuse on ATV plays Profile 7 by ignoring the Dolby Vision and falling back to the HDR10 layer.

@Volts That doesn’t have anything to do with it. Almost all BD rips are DV profile 7. In fact all mine are and they all fall back to HDR on the ATV4K and play just fine. I am pretty sure this is PLEX not being able to play a 60 fps movie.

Side note: Plex recently added “DV” support to the ATV4K but you must be using non HD audio and it seems to only be triggering the DV tag on the TV not actual playing it.

It just can’t and it’s been pointed out for this film before. Infuse does play it without a problem though.

So I guess they have no intention on fixing? Could it be a limitation on iOS/tvOS in general? Wish someone form PLEX would comment.

It’s not that, Infuse is also an ATV app and that plays it fine. I’m sure it’ll be fixed eventually but with so little content in this format, it may not be a top priority.

You are probably right. I get a lot of micro stuttering of 4K content using PLEX on tvOS also. None of which happens with Infuse. I much prefer the UI of PLEX though. Oh well.

I was curious about the hype, so I got hold of Gemini Man.

4K, 60fps, HDR10, 95 Mbps.
Plex on the ATV 4K is playing it smoothly. I do have to use the old video player.
