Just got a new AppleTV 4K. Anything i can do to help get plex closer to playing 4K?
I am pretty sure Plex plays 4K content. The question is, does the Plex AppleTV App support it?
Plex (server side) plays 4K. I assume the issue is either the Plex AppleTV App, or the server not identifying the AppleTV 4K as a different model that can receive 4K content.
Either way if there’s anything i can do to test or help out, i’ll be happy to do it.
I’m having the same issue with the new Apple TV 4K. Plex can handle x265 videos in 1080p and 4K in mp4 and mkv containers. I also have a Nvidia Shield TV, Roku 4 and Sony A1E (Android TV). All three of them “direct play” x265 videos without an issue. The Sony tv buffers a little on 4k files but I believe it’s due to the TV’s processing power.
Looking at other posts, there needs to be a different profile for the Apple TV 4K. Similar to the Roku’s and Sony TV’s. They have separate profiles for their different devices. The Apple TV 4K is using the same profile for the older Apple TV that doesn’t support x265 or 4K videos.
I enjoyed this read about the ATV 4K, considered it a worthy share. Especially the part about outputting every source in the same video format is (in the authors words) a bit nuts!
