What do I need to do to start over?

I have a paid accout, I set up a few devices, but I messed up somewhere and now can’t do anything useful. I am going to build a new RaspberryPi 4 plex server and want to NOT have Plex remember anything I have already done. Can I get a new account and transfer the payment? Is there a way to change my userid or something? I have NO desire to try and fix anything, as I said I am building a brand new server.

Here you go…

Ok, but it was many months ago, maybe even years and I don’t remember where anything was set up. Certainly not on my current laptop a Mac Air, but I see Plex on my phone and I think it is on my Apple TV. I also think I might have messed with a web version? This is why I think I need a new ID before I start again only this time slower. It’s important enough for my mental health to just forget I already paid and start a new plan under a new email if you can’t show me another way.

You really really don’t need to switch accounts for a fresh start.

Your existing devices might be looking for old servers that don’t exist any more, but you can remove them like they were never there.

If you delete your Plex account, you cannot use the same Plex userid or e-mail to sign up for a new account for 30 days. No idea about transferring Plex Pass to a new userid. You would have to contact Plex Billing (Billing Questions at the bottom of the page).

A better way is:

  1. Follow the document linked by @tom80H to completely remove existing Plex Media Server installations from any of your systems.

  2. Delete all devices from the list of Authorized Devices: https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/devices/all.

  3. Change your Plex account password (Account Settings), and be sure to select Sign out connected devices after password change when doing so.

Those three steps will remove Plex Media Server from any of your systems and remove all authorized clients and servers from your Plex account (except for the web browser login you are using at that time).

You keep the same userid and do not need to transfer a Plex Pass between accounts.

Ok, no need to remove existing, I changed computers so they are long gone.
I deleted 2 Chrome devices.
I tried to set my nickname and it said taken. My nickname is fairly unique so I modified it a bit. That worked BUT somehow an old picture of me was associated with it, very strange.
I changed the email and password (in 2 places but same) and never saw an option to sign out of connected devices.
I need to study what the guest user and that other kind of user (sorry short term memory is about gone) means as that is where I got messed up before I think.’
My plan is to get another RaspberryPi 4B and use it as a dedicated Plex server. 512GB boot SSD, 2x8TB media HDD’s, connected by ethernet cable to a switch connected to my router. I am hoping that I can play movies and music from there using my Apple TV, BUT the most important issue is setting up the TV part. I am in Canada. I only have 1 OTA chanel available but will soon get Starlink (the new mobile version) for internet free chanels. I am a full time RVer so that is why I am doing this. I cut the cable a while ago and now survive on ‘free’ WiFi. Anything you can point me at to assist would be welcome, I don’t know if Plex TV needs a tuner to work over the internet and the other issue is sorting out what and how many userids I need. I want the Pi to run unattended and headless so I will need an additional admin level ID to run the system from my Apple and use it (a third non-admin ID?)

When I was doing the above Lastpass asked to save the ‘new’ credentials. I just closed all open tabs and went to look in Lastpass but only found the old id/pswd. I launched it and VOILA my username I wanted came back, plus 3 other users. No idea where the other account went, but when I get the new server set up we will see what happens. I am not that optimistic.

Not sure why you have so many Plex accounts. For yourself, you need one account. You use the same account to login from the AppleTV, a mobile device, or any other client. You use the same account to configure your Plex server.

If one of the accounts has a Plex Pass, then use that account.

The Plex LiveTV & DVR feature requires a network accessible OTA TV tuner. You can read more about the capability, including supported tuners, in the documentation. You can also peruse the LiveTV & DVR section of the forum. xTEVE is a 3rd party tool that supports using IPTV services instead of an OTA tuner.

Plex also has free online tv streaming and video on demand. These are ad supported services. They stream over the Internet. A Plex server is not required. You can read more about them in the Online Media Sources documentation. You can enable/disable the services in your Account Settings.

Thank you so much for bearing with an old tech geezer. I should explain I am on the spectrum, mostly Asperger with some ADD. My ‘gift’ is the ability to debug other peoples code and produce the fastest transaction processor. I once held the record. But this Plex has the better of me.
Earlier this morning I used a different ID. I just found 2 entries in Lastpass. They both end up at the same place but the new nickname is gone. I deleted the new account and the LP entry. Now I have my old account back but it has 3 users, one admin, one for my iPhone and 1 for my wifes iPhone. Isn’t it common practice to keep super-user credentials away from 3rd parties? When I set up a Pi, I don’t use root or pi even, I create a ‘normal’ user so if I want to do something dangerous I have to use sudo and provide a password. This gives me a chance to realize what I am doing might have consequences. Is it not possible for a black hat to get into my laptop or phone if I have loose security by sharing passwords? I have well over a hundred passwords and know NONE of them, I use Lastpass. Also, am I mixing tow products like Plex Media Server and Plex ‘player’? It just occurred to me that might be the case.

I am now using the Plex Pass account. How do I delete the other users?

I have been looking at the online TV and wondered about the ads. Now I know. IPTV is illegal in my country although lots of folks use it. I did look into it before I found out it was illegal and it was impossible to understand so I will stay away from that and I have a relative employed by a national provider so would not want to disrespect him by stealing his content.

I forgot, so if I want to allow my wife to access Plex online or Plex Media Server, I have to give her the superuser password? It is 32 chars long composed of UpperLowerNumbersSymbols, she doesn’t use Lastpass so writes everything down. Not ideal.

Sorry, I keep remembering things. If I do have to add her, is she a managed user, or a guest? How does a guest gain access to my class C private network without some sort of security. I prefer strong passwords and 2FA.

A person in your Plex Home can be either a Managed User or a user with a plex.tv account.

For a Managed User, the Plex server admin must login on the device with the admin userid/password. You can then switch to the Managed User ID. The user cannot switch to another ID unless they know the PIN. You can use the autologin setting on the device so you do not have to repeat the process every time the app is used.

Example: sonofcy logs into the Plex app on a phone. Switch to RonsiPhone and enter PIN. In app settings, enable Sign In Automatically. When the app is launched again, RonsiPhone will be signed in automatically. RonsiPhone cannot switch to another Plex Home account unless they know the PIN.

An alternative is for the user to have their own Plex.tv account. You then invite them into your Plex Home. They login with their own account credentials. The Plex server admin/password is not required.

Example: junialexander creates an account at plex.tv. After the account is created, you invite junialexander into your Plex Home via “Invite Existing User” and they accept the invitation. junialexander then logs into the Plex app on their device using their own Plex account userid/password. They can switch to another account if they know the PIN.

How you configure sharing on your server is up to you.

If you do not want your wife to know the Plex admin password, then set her up with her own account and then invite her to your Plex Home.

This is discussed in more detail in the Plex Home documentation. The Example Plex Home Setup has an overview of inviting existing users and creating managed users.

The guest account is meant for occasional/temporary use by someone to which you do not want to provide full access - babysitter, relative visiting for a week, etc.

See Creating a Plex Home.

THANK YOU for that great explainer. I have had a great deal of difficulty reading technical material since about 1979 so I rely mostly on common sense, experience and a little reading. Sorry, but I find your help system a little bit hard to use. I am sure it’s all there but not always easy to find. A search for delete user turns up 33 results and not one of them appears to be the answer. Now I know how to setup my wife and I as normal users plus the admin account I already have with yearly pass.
If I may ask, is there any more I need to know for the Media Server account vs Plex (Home?) account admin users. In other words, can my one existing account be the admin user for both? I think so but want to be sure.
Just an FYI, my first computer was 1959. Former IBM staff level, chief programmer for DJ and eventually owned my own consulting company with 2 employees. You might think I should get this stuff, but as I said I am on the spectrum and some stuff is easy and some hard. So far this one is in the hard category.
Is there anything I can do to express my heart felt thanks, some sort of review or similar? I know how important those are to professionals like yourself.

Mouse over the username. Click the X on the right.

The account that claims the server is the Admin for both the server and the Plex Home associated with the server. You cannot separate them. They are the same.

A Plex account can be a member of just one Plex Home. If you have friends with their own Plex servers and share libraries with them, invite each other as Friends, not as Plex Home members.

If someone invites you (sonofcy) to be a member of their Plex Home and you accept, they will become the admin of your server. Vice versa if you invite someone with their own Plex server to be a member of your Plex Home.

Thank you for the kind words. I’m a Plex user just like you. Ninja means I have moderator privileges. I can re-tag posts, close threads, stuff like that.

Pay it forward. If you see a post where you can help, do so. It helps us all.

I’m a retired network engineer. If you need someone to configure VTAM for remote 3274s over X.25 or token ring, convert EBCDIC to ASCII, or program Fortran 77 on punch cards for a S360 let me know.
