But I don't think "Force transcode" actually does force transcoding to occur. At least not in all circumstances.
Before describing my issue in more detail, a clear statement of what this setting is intended to do would be very helpful. Before posting I read everything I could find, but couldn't see the answer. I guess it's meant to be self-evident.
Well... it forces the PMS transcoder into action. PMS itself might decide, that only a remuxing in needed, I guess. But you won't get a native play on the media...
Is there a way to really force transcoding to occur? So that just remuxing isn't a possibility? I think this is what "Direct Streaming -> OFF" does on the iOS or PlexWeb clients.
I have mkv files that give problems on the iOS, PlexWeb and PlexConnect clients. With iOS and PlexWeb, setting Direct Streaming OFF causes these files to play correctly. Presumably because they are now being transcoded, which removes whatever is causing the issues.
But with PlexConnect, setting Force Transcode ON, which sounds like it might be the same thing, does not have the same effect. The files still do not play correctly. The only way I've found so far to get them to play on PlexConnect is to set Transcoder Quality to something less than than the video quality of the file in question, which I guess forces transcoding to occur, thus removing the problem, but now I'm watching low quality video.
Sooo, I'm hoping for a PlexConnect equivalent to "Direct Streaming OFF".
