What embedded metadata is used by Premium Music?

I recently purchased the Plex Pass, and I’ve been experimenting with moving my music library from iTunes to Plex. However, I find that a big hurdle for me is the lack of visibility into the iTunes “Comments” metadata. Over the years I’ve used that field for tagging tracks, and generating smart playlists from those tags. I don’t see that field when I import into Plex. I’m wondering if there’s a list of supported file metadata that I could use to move those tags from Comments to Genre, for example, so that they become visible to Plex.

Also related, is Plex capable of editing the embedded metadata? Or does it only keep the edited or added tags inside the app?

Plex has not and will likely never include functionality to modify the files, so No, plex is not capable of editing the embedded metadata. It just extracts it and uses it to populate information in Plex, if you have the scanner set to use it.

If your on Windows, I’d recommend using Mp3Tag to edit your file metadata. The only tags Plex really uses are the ones you can mostly edit in the interface, which are:

Track Number
Disc Number
Title
Album
Sort Album
Artist
Sort Artist
Album Artist
Sort Album Artist
Year
Genre
Artwork (Coverart/picture)
