What happens when I move my TV/Movie library to a different drive?

Question, I currently have my TV and Movie library on the same drive. I’m probably going to have to split up my movie and TV directories to different drives due to space issues.

I’m going to copy the current content to another drive and change where the library is pointed to on plex.

I’ve made lots of customizations to correct TV seasons and movie titles, uploaded lots of cover art etc.

When I change the directory to another drive will I lose all the customization I’ve done to the library? will it do a new scan and from scratch?

I won;t be switching PC’s or anything just copying the content from one drive to another changing the library pointer and then deleting it off the old drive.

See Moving Media Content to a New Location.

Suggest running a trial with just a few movies to make sure it works before moving entire libraries.

Fantastic suggestion!

I’ve done this, and it will scan from scratch unless you follow all of those instructions. After copying all of the files to the new drive, add that new folder location to your library without removing the old folder location or deleting files. After it scans the new location, it will show every file as a duplicate, but will retain all of your customization because those shows etc already existed. After finishing, you can then remove the old location and rescan. It will remove the duplicates and only have the new files left. It’s simpler than Plex makes it sound.

My advice: keep the files where they are.
Only add the new drive,
Create folders on it for movies and TV shows.
Then add the new movie folder to your existing movie library.
Do the same with the new tv show folder.

Then there is no moving of files required.
If you want to find out on which drive a certain file is stored, just look at the Plex media info.

Good Idea I’ll try it that way,

Thanks for the tip but I’ll need to separate them to keep track of things and backups, it will be much easier in the long run to keep track of individual drives for Music/Audio?tv then have them all mixed.
