What is a "Duplicate" file

Server Version#: 1.30.0.6406

One of the tools I use to manage my library and keep things clean is to list “Duplicates”. I depend on it because, frankly, the search function doesn’t always find what I’m looking for, so I end up with duplicates.

Recently I have begun adding 4k movies. The filename has -2160p in it. When the scan adds the file, it is seen as a “duplicate” movie. Of course I get the option on which one I want to play - and I’d like to keep that working. The problem is that keeping them seen as duplicates makes a mess of the “Duplicates” listing. The only way to keep my “duplicates” list functional is to have plex break the movies apart, and seen as separate movies.

I’m early into playing with this (and editions). At the moment I wish I could place an exception into the duplicate hunt, excusing ‘duplicates’ that contain different resolutions. Just hunting for some feedback from other users. Is this something you are dealing with and what are you doing?

Duplicates refers to files Plex considers to be different versions of the same movie. Usually this means different quality versions (e.g. 4K vs. SD).

Which I think makes my point. If I have 5,000 movies that are SD, with corresponding 4k version. and I ask for duplicates, these titles will all show up as duplicates. In that group of duplicates will be 2 movies with same titles, both SD quality. I have no way of finding it among the 5,000 SD & 4K titles - unless I break those apart, so as not to appear as duplicates.
